HALF A DOZEN PUBS IN EVERY GBG COUNTY No. 49 – EAST YORKSHIRE

It punches above its weight, it really does.

Bring back Humberside and you’d have a great GBG chapter. Well, you’d add one pub from Barton-on-Humber, anyway.

In truth it’s hard to stick to one pub in ‘ull, as any UK tourist ought to spend a week here, if only to visit the loos,

and a church.

I sense my pub pick might confound the purists.

Kingston-upon-Hull – The Station Inn

But the Station, half a mile north of town, was an instant classic, with warm welcome, raging fire, banter across the bar, a symphony in brown.

No telly for the World Cup, and sensible local cask beers. I’ll forgive the jam jars.

The soundtrack, from a ghetto blaster on the bar, lurches from “Baggy Trousers” to “Message In A Bottle” via local adverts. Shazam identifies The Police in 0.7 seconds.

The sort of pub you’re told doesn’t get in the GBG any more, but they really do.

And if you want a pub in the wonderful Old Town, today I’d go with Ye Olde White Hart, the Whitelocks of Hull.

But that’s your call.

You’ll want to visit Beverley on your East Yorkshire tour,

the Minster, pedestrianised markets and cheese draw older visitors from across the county, and one new pub seemed designed to appeal to gentlefolk trade.

Beverley – Monks Walk

A decade ago the Cornerhouse and Sun seemed the big draws; now it was GBG newbie Monks Walk that felt the destination pub.  I can’t think of an equivalent in Manchester (perhaps the Briton’s Protection ), but in Cambridge it would be the Free Press, a slightly upmarket pub without too much intrusive food.

A maze of rooms on both sides of that alley, but most folk were in the long bar and a baronial style room which seemed to have the gentlefolk wine trade, and the only free seat. I had to move a collection hat, which drew rebuke from a JC lookalike who I suspected had been reciting madrigals to the crowd.”

There may be “better” pubs (whatever “better” means), but the Monk is the one you’d show off to an American tourist.

You’re probably heading to Bridlington for the bird watching at Flamborough Head, but Brid Old Town is quite wonderful,

Bridlington – Board

and before the Board brought me here I never knew it even had an Old Town.

Many will tell you there’s more interesting beer in the 3 Bs micro in New Town, and that’s true,

but the Board is where you go to feel slightly posh and drink Plum Porter, so Mrs RM loved it.

Actually, the next one is slightly upmarket as well,

Rawcliffe – Jemmy Hirst at the Rose & Crown

and little Rawcliffe is beautifully situated next to the Aire.

It’s a jolly place, the age range is 18 to 68, they’re a member of the Tim Taylor Championship Club (bit like Tufty I guess) so I joined the regulars on that.

And, though Rawcliffe may lack attractions, it has a great Chinese takeaway in Gia Hing.

Another tourist honeypot to end this set.

Goole – Tom Pudding

I had to include Goole. 30 years ago I drove Mrs RM to Goole fields because it looked nice on my map and we had a horrific curry in the market place. And we’re still married.

I’d like to have included the bikers pub, the Mackintosh, but instead you get the micro, but that’s OK.

The Tom Pudding has a lovely mix of folk. Young chaps with posh accents (probably from Epworth) playing cards, a chap with a Corbyn hat, a lady with a knitted poppy, regulars at the bar laughing at someone trying to pay by card.

Coloured cyders, fortified wine, the works. You could be in the Cambridge Blue“. I wrote in 2019.

See ! Goole is Great.

Over to you to complete the dozen (or just agree with Ye Olde White Hart if you want).

  1. That area of Hull with the White Harte(s) and Black Boy is just immense, just wish it was easier to get to from Stockton when I’m bored of Bass. I got so bored I haven’t had one since Christmas Day.

A street called the Land of Green Ginger. The fishes on the cobbles. There’s nowt else like it.

I was once drinking there when a horde came in with my old uni mate Quinten T in tow.
A Pubsgalore trip – I’ve since been on some intentionally but that was a random coincidence though they don’t believe me!

    1. Bored of Stockton !!!! I know what you mean. I’m desperate to get out of Sheffield/Waterbeach/Kent cycle.

And the Land of Green Ginger, what magic.

Didn’t know you knew Quinno from Aber !

  2. The Station is (or was) next to a level crossing and appears on a lot of old photos of Hull.

I’d go for the Olde Blue Bell in Hull and the White Horse in Beverley. But I would say that, wouldn’t I? 😛

      1. I have one taken inside the Olde Blue Bell in 2017 when it was still permitted. That was when I overheard one codger say to another “If it weren’t for all these modern medical treatments, we’d be dead, wouldn’t we?”
