March 2026. Cologne. Germany.

Back in Cologne from Dusseldorf, an early night we admired the Dom,

then persuaded Mrs RM that despite our exertions,

another tick in the 2006 German Beer Guide was required.

Perhaps it’s the name, but I’d wanted to visit Sünner im Walfisch, between Heumarkt and Fischmarkt.

Nothing like the showpiece Brauerei like Frush, Sion and Peters, Sünner is a small and cosy bar best described on Ron’s still vital guide, and best viewed from the upstairs gallery.

Actually, do many Cologne pubs have upstairs ?

There’s a standup taproom at the front, populated today by Americans celebrating St Patricks Day.

It have the place a more pubby feel, and Ron’s **** rating felt right to me.

But please, PLEASE, don’t ask me to rate the Kolsch. I’ll leave that to Paul.

Never follow Alt with Kolsch, that way lies madness.

I need to check my note, when I’m back in the UK, as I’m not sure if I’ve been to Sunner im Waldfisch. I must be slipping!

I looked through your Cologne posts and saw you’d been to the actual brewery on one trip!

Thanks Martin. Sounds like you’ve had an interesting visit to the Rhineland.
We’re sailing along the coast of Eastern England, and are currently opposite the Humber estuary.
After five days of being buffeted by strong winds and high waves, we will be glad to be back on solid ground.
Plenty of reports to follow, in due course. Paul

I’m looking forward to your reports, particularly on Tromso. I imagine you’ve got a busy time converting all those photos into posts, Paul !

I would be interested in Tromso too since I not long read a book set there.

We visited 2 winters ago for the Northern Lights. It’s cute but I’ll never get over just how cold it was !

Stick a third spire on that dom and it could almost beat Lichfield.
