ST MARY’S CHURCH, GLYNDE (NCSS 4)

October 2026. Glynde. East Sussex.

We didn’t actually make it up the hill to the opera house at Glyndebourne; blame it on my dodgy leg or Mrs RM’s dodgy foot, whatever.

But we made it as far as Glynde Place (I’m a bit confused by all the Glyndes to be honest), which you can peep into from the graveyard of the parish church.

St Mary’s deserves its high RM rating for the approach as much as the church itself.

Yes, the blue skies and early autumnal colour are key,

but this is a magical entrance.

Built to replace a medieval predecessor in the 1760s by Richard Trevor, of whom more later, a newspaper at the time reported that it is “a neat and elegant building, and is very decently ornamented“.

I’m not sure what I think of the Mary portrait on the front.

But inside it’s all elegance,

with some gorgeous stained glass.

Right, let’s go and find Mr Trevor’s pub, shall we ?
