I’d woke up that Monday at my usual 05:45 (sorry, Duncan) to catch the farming news, and now it was 18:45 on Tuesday and I’d only had two (2) hours sleep in thirty-seven, snatched on the Ben-My-Chree on that early morning crossing from Heysham.
Technically, I could have caught the evening journey back to Heysham, arriving at 23:30 that night. BUT I wanted another lunch time on Man just in case there was closed pub drama on Tuesday, and besides I didn’t fancy sleeping on Morecambe Bay.
So I’d booked a night in the Welbeck, from where I messaged Manx legend Dave Halliwell. “Fancy a pint, Dave ?”.
Dave did, and half an hour later I was in The Albert, a classic port pub opposite the market.
Mysteriously, the font for the Albert on Google is a bit different to the 2022 reality,
but in every other respect this is as unchanged a town boozer as you could wish, with Sooty’s black eye still recovering from an incident in 2010.
£2.75 your pint of Bushy’s. It’s worth that just to sit on the bench seats.
I’d picked the Albert as I missed it on a legendary night in Douglas in 2018, and it’s always good to compare Okells with Bushy’s.
It’s a perfect pub, a symphony in brown, though perhaps not one for the refined lady in your household. Mrs RM would love it.
Dave joined me in the “posh bit” and we must have talked rubbish for the next 3 hours as I didn’t take many photos, or any notes.
but I know we literally stepped next door to the Old Market Inn, if anything an even less changed town boozer.
No idea who the chap at the bar is, but the regular with the hand was a tremendous raconteur.
If the Albert is the Grey Horse, then the Old Market is the Circus.
And I can’t say fairer than that.
NB I just reminded myself what BRAPA made of the Market in 2018;
“The barman, who didn’t seem an ideal fit for the clientele, tried a Barry Scott Cilit Bang joke, which went down like a lead balloon, as did his acoustic guitar playing.
“The barman, who didn’t seem an ideal fit for the clientele, tried a Barry Scott Cilit Bang joke, which went down like a lead balloon, as did his acoustic guitar playing. Crazy place.” Spot on, Si.
