Easter Sunday 2022. He is risen. Mrs RM rose about 11:12, and joined me for a walk to the Rivelin Valley, which unexpectedly led at Champs Sports Bar (I spy a handpump) to a diversion up the hill to the Horse & Jockey, No. xyz on my famous All The Pubs In Sheffield…On Foot ! series.

This one is up the hill from Hillsborough in Wadsley, home to that Natalie Imbruglia/Hi-Vis Proper Pub I wrote about last week.

The Horse & Jockey, recently taken on by True North, is a Proper Pub, despite the Bassetts fixation and flowers.

By Proper Pub I mean somewhere anyone would go and feel comfortable, so you get families whose toddlers has eaten too many chocolate buttons, you let lads on the Madri, you get ladies on the Prosecco, you get Old Boys drinking Stones.

Frankly, if the cask isn’t shifting on Easter Sunday in a pub which promotes it then cask is in trouble.

But the pub is great, the staff brilliant, the soundtrack decent,

the Sunday lunch luscious.

And when I switched to the Clwb Tropicana after 2 dull pints of Frome and Stones and Mrs RM said “Why didn’t you get that one first ?” I knew what she meant.

We then lolloped (?) down the hill and popped in the brand new Beekeeper opposite B & M Bargains for a coffee.

It’s a nice cafe with beer, more than a micro, but the Abbeydale on handpump was Sheffield standard and the views to die for as they say on Trip Advisor.

What a nice lunchtime.

Shame I had to spoil it by suggesting we pop in the Spoons for a pudding, then.

Oh well it’s not Easter if you don’t have a double Amaretto (her) and mini bottle of Prosecco (him).

I deserved the hangover that lasted till (checks notes) today.

  1. I know your map insert shows Champs Sports Bar, but Google, WhatPub and Pubs Galore all have it as being called Loxley Sports Bar & Grill for more than two years. I only want to know, because if it has changed back to Champs I’ll have to go and take another photo of it. Please supply a version of the truth that will be the least trouble to both of us.

    Many thanks.
