A TRIP TO WILKO

Mrs RM has reached the conservatory with her scary wallpaper stripper. You don’t want that machine anywhere near your genitals, that’s for sure, particularly when there’s no chocolate in the house.

So I braved the snow, and headed into town for an “essential purchase” from Wilko. Can you guess what it was ?

I tend to alternate trips into town between glitzy Kelham Island and the scruffy industrial streets near the Chinese students quarter.

2 months after moving, I’m starting to get the hang of the routes, which must ALWAYS pass the Shakespeare (top) for legal reasons.

Today I bring you the Exchange Brewery, home of Tennents/Whitbread till 1993.

The so-called Riverside Quarter looks a bit neglected these days, but I bet you can’t wait till I can actually go in the Hen & Chickens on Castle Green.

In 2014 Will “Stella” Larter scored it a 6, and noted;

Having heard of its rough reputation, one of my mates pleaded for a chance to make a farewell phone call to his children, but this proved to be unnecessary.

This is one of their Facebook photos from a year ago;

No photo description available.

And what did I buy from Wilko, along with 2 bars of M & Ms chocolate ?

  1. the hen and chickens is amazing, you’ll find people in there who really have no right to still be alive due to all kinds of abuse their bodies and minds have taken just hanging on in there, just be careful if the big rasta with the knife comes in chanting, he’s a volatile one

  2. You’ve cracked, it’s a home-brew kit yes? You’re opening one of those garden shed pseudo pubs where you can smoke your pipe in peace and never have to rub shoulders with strangers again. The Plant Pot & Crispy Beef Gentlemans Saloon Bar, open 12.30-2pm Sunday, GBG 2022 assured.

  3. Does the existence of a Chinese students quarter result in improved quality in the nearby Chinese take aways?

    Don’t think I’ve ever seen a pub sign that has the word “Residential” at the bottom. Not sure how that’s meant to be interpreted– makes me think of pubs that have tragically been turned into flats! 😦

    1. Possibly not takeaways, but the quality of the nearby restaurants seems very high, Mark. The large one nearest the student quarters had menus entirely in Chinese with pictures, and there are dozens of informal looking places on the main student drag. I’ll be fine !

      Not sure I can recall “Residential” on a pub sign either, possibly clarifying it’s status for licensing reasons.

    There’s not many things I want near my genitals, thank you very much!

    “and headed into town for an “essential purchase” from Wilko. Can you guess what it was ?”

    Roger? 😉

    “and the scruffy industrial streets near the Chinese students quarter.”

    In the photos below, is that Pagliacci?

    “Today I bring you the Exchange Brewery,”

    It’s just a big opening!

    “but I bet you can’t wait till I can actually go in the Hen & Chickens on Castle Green.”

    I’m sure there will be a hen party and some slightly sozzled gal riding a giant dildo, yes?

    “Having heard of its rough reputation, one of my mates pleaded for a chance to make a farewell phone call to his children, but this proved to be unnecessary.“

    Blimey!

  5. I am still trying to come to terms with how you are able to avoid doing any remodeling in your house! I have redone our house(each room,8 rooms and 2.5 baths) at least two times. And avoiding Christmas. I am envious! And then there are(were?) the pubs visits…

    1. Not my job, Dick. My job is to be hunter-gatherer, executing dangerous trips to the supermarket and beer shop during a time of plague. Decorating is Mrs RM’s job.

      And I just don’t celebrate Christmas. End of. Remembering my OWN birthday is hard enough.

  6. OK. You bought one of those insulated water bottles. Clue from name of pub. You could have had the one I won with the corporate logo on if I’d known! Next we will have to guess what you fill it with! If I find it in the campervan after a night out, I will not be drinking contents!

      1. Just the bits near the ceiling to go which require ladder, due to short legs. I’m done for now. Beer would be a very acceptable prizr. Thankyou
