September 2023. Farnborough. There were a few restaurant options for our stay in Farnborough, including an ultra-rare Wimpy and Poppins, a Harvester (with Doom Bar) and Harvester (without). But the Spoons was a minute’s walk from our Premier Inn, so that got the vote (I’d just done my 15k steps). Not the most attractive, tucked… Continue reading WHO ORDERED THOSE CANS ?

THE NETHER STOWEY WHINGERS ANGLING CLUB
One last tick in That Somerset, making a late but probably futile bid for my Top 10 counties post, whenever that is. Ah, Never Stowey, handy for the Quantocks and Samuel Taylor Coleridge devotees. Whoever they are. A tidy village of 1,373 with a steep walk to the castle mound. The Long Buckby of the… Continue reading THE NETHER STOWEY WHINGERS ANGLING CLUB
TWO SPOONS ON MONDAY
A great pub runs on Dire Straits and mobility scooters, a great retiredmartin post runs on questionable ’80s pop inserted for the benefit of Mr Crilley. That’s THIS Monday just gone. I seem to be catching up. Awoken by joggers (!) at 7, I left Baa Baa Toure to guard the campervan on Teignmouth Prom… Continue reading TWO SPOONS ON MONDAY
PORTLAND SOCIAL CLUB – THE DIFFICULT SECOND ALBUM
Our Sunday entertainment concluded on the sceptered Isle of Portland, a 90 minute walk from the Wyke Smuggler. It would have been an hour if we’d stuck to the path, rather than the sand and pebbles, but where’s the fun in that ? Here’s a delightful bit of OS map. Note how the straight lines… Continue reading PORTLAND SOCIAL CLUB – THE DIFFICULT SECOND ALBUM
EXEBRIDGE & THE CASE FOR ABBOT
It was a flying visit to Exmoor, but long enough to establish that any tourists there were could be found walking to the Tarr Steps. I’m joking of course, no-one walks that far these days, and there are killer snakes out there. Actually, they were all looking for the lone open pub; that turned out to… Continue reading EXEBRIDGE & THE CASE FOR ABBOT
EXMOOR CLOSED FOR SUMMER
It’s a dozen years since we last visited Exmoor, other than the odd trip to Minehead. Our son is staying with a mate in Bridgwater, so we’ve pitched up near Dulverton, to the north of the National Park. There’s a pub on our doorstep, but that’ll have to wait for the photos to upload. It’s a… Continue reading EXMOOR CLOSED FOR SUMMER
FALLING FOR MINEHEAD
Great weather in Somerset today, painting Minehead at it’s best. On a couple of earlier visits it’s lived down to it’s status as a pleasant but nondescript seaside resort, comparable to a Cleethorpes or Ayr, but it shone today. In the sun, the shapes and colours of Exmoor meeting the sea came through, and the walks… Continue reading FALLING FOR MINEHEAD
