More “Ticking the Tickers” on Saturday, as I finally meet up with one of my favourite bloggers Evo of EvoBoozySaddler fame.
I’d been waiting till Walsall got a new entry in the Beer Guide to catch up, but it looks like that’s never going to happen so he had to visit me.
Goodness me he made me look like a scruff in that scarlett shirt, lovely brown brogues too.
His visit to Sheffield is all about colours, too, as Evo is visiting pubs representing all the colours (Americans : colors) on the Cluedo (American : Clue) board.
Is there really a pub with “Slate-Grey” in the name ?
I doubt there’s much mustard, but there is an Olde Mustard Pot near me, and Evo seems almost as excited to get to Midhopestones as I did finishing the GBG on Taversoe.
It’s matchday at Hillsborough, a slow slog up the A61, and I take a detour through Grenoside and stop to show our guest a Sam Smiths pub. Not many Sam Smiths in the West Midlands.
I bore Evo with tales (possibly apocryphal) of the Cow & Calf being summarily closed by Humphrey because they didn’t serve his favourite dessert, and of course it could be true.
If Evo blogs about this he’ll tell you just how gorgeous the interior is, but as Humphrey’s rules outlive Humphrey I can’t show you that.
I had the non-alcoholic Brown ale (one of the best of the low ABVs) from that impressive bottle collection.
And then a ride through the bucolic Wharncliffe and Greno woods to the Stockbridge bypass, and the car park of the Mustard Pot, where Evo takes photos of horses.
I really enjoyed this unfussy dining pub on the edge of the moors the other month, and again it had a proper mix of custom, though Evo was nearly suffocated at the door by a mass of balloons celebrating Emily’s first birthday.
At the bar, completing his mission, Evo politely asks the young barmaid to pick a character, a location and a murder weapon from his oustretched hand.
“It’s OK, he’s harmless” I say.

I don’t know if it would have counted, but locally the Wagon and Horses Langsett is known locally as Billy Green’s after an old landlord or forgotten pagan god or something

Its a shame you weren’t around South Leeds in the 70s and 80s, there was a pub just off the M1 at Stourton (which in those days, was where it ended) on the opposite side to Waddingtons factory, where Monopoly was made, called Colonel Mustards….

Is there really a pub with “Slate-Grey” in the name ?
There used to be a pub in canterbury called “Slatters”. And this year I’ve used a Greyhound and a Grey Horse ( and of course the Greyt Western with its grey paes ).
