A PREEMPTIVE BRATFUD CURRY

May 2026. Bradford.

You can always trust a person who likes Bradford, or Blackpool, or is torn on the virtues of Maidenhead.

The Southworths always seem impressed by Bradford’s centenary square; the city hall, the fountains, the Wetherspoons,

the view across to the Alhambra and the wonderfully revitalised Science and Media Museum, where we joined Joan and Dave admiring the Cottingley fairies and something you may recognise from Doctor Who.

A masterpiece of a museum, spacious and endlessly interesting. But there’s only so much culture you can throw at Americans, and beer and curry called.

And here’s the thing; central Bradford is a bit lacking in classic pubs these days, with the Fighting Cocks and Corn Dolly a bit far out.

But what’s this opposite the city hall ?

Bank Holiday brings EDM and beer under canvas to Bradford. Only cask from Ilkley,

the plastic glass knocking Mary Jane to a 3, which is OK.

It was cold under canvas, which doesn’t help. A late afternoon curry at one of the Bratfud classics called, but the International was completely booked for hours, so we struggled on up Morley Road for a bit to My Peshwar,

which is so new that Curry Heute hasn’t been yet. In contrast to the International, My Peshwar was largely local Pakistani trade, with a wonderful family atmosphere (and fantastic staff).

I thought the mixed grill, particularly the fish, was a winner; Dave is a curry pro who had to taste the karahai as well.

I tried my very best, but I couldn’t quite help him finish it.

  1. We do not get the level of Indian food in the states that you get in the UK. So when we visit we always order a lot of food!

Licking my chops in envy over here.

  2. For all your readers, I thouroughly recommend the Karachi, its onion bhajis (which are technically pakoras really) aren’t quite as good as they were in the 80s or 90s, but its curries are still great, and 3 free chapattis like all good Bradford ‘mucky curry’ places do. Rick Stein had a visit here too, and loved it.

I’ll try and attach a map, so fingers crossed, you can see where it is, and not as far up the hill as My Peshawar, which did look very good.

    1. Good suggestion, Rich, and I’d recnoommend the Karachi (visit in 2023) as well;

ON THE BUSES TO OUTER BRADFORD

This really was a top experience up there with the Kashmir and the International.

Since the Rick Stein visit the trade seems to have been white rather than Asian Bradford (hope it’s OK to say that), so I suspect it would have been as busy as the International.

Quite hard to spot, on Neal Street just below the Media museum.
