NELLIES

March 2026. Beverley.

Well, this may prove to be a completely pointless post, attempting to describe the magic of a Sam Smiths pub without pictures. But the route to the White Horse (aka Nellies) takes you past St Mary’s,

which is almost as magical as the Minster.

But not as magical as Nellies, which on my first visit for 20 years really astounded me, though no Sam Smiths pub should really come as a surprise.

Oh, I can’t have my phone on ? Darn.

Good job some fvisitors on Google have ancient cameras then.

Thanks John. Thanks Rob. This old website is pretty good, too.

Gas lit, five rooms I counted (all busy), mixed crowd, a good OBB (3.5), and that agony of not being able to take notes, let alone photos.

And all the time I wondered how long it was till my train back to Driffield, where I skipped the Butchers Dog,

and joined the longest queue for a Chinese takeaway on a Sunday I’ve ever seen at K H Garden.

Crispy beef and Singapore rice NCTSS 3.5 with Buzzy Bee for company, a great night.

  1. I visited Beverley a few times back in the mid 70’s when I was stepping out with a Hull University student who lived in halls in Cottingham. It was very popular with students at the time . I have mostly erased it from my memory however but I bet Nellies hasn’t changed since then . I hope to visit again sometime -I love a good Minster town.
