LINCOLN PART III – WIG AND MITRE

October 2024. Lincoln.

Look at the concentration in those fingers as pub men pore over Stafford Paul’s meticulous list of essential Lincoln pubs on our Big Day Out.

Obviously I would have preferred something a little less trad,

but I feared Glory Holes would force our crew to make an agonising decision between Gamma Ray and Neck Oil, and we stuck to plan leaving the Cardinals Hat.

“YOU can go in the Strait and Narrow for your flight of Belgian beers” said someone,

and due to either dithering over that decision or trying to fathom what these are,

I found myself at the back of the pack of hill walkers at the halfway point.

A nice camera shop here,

perfect for taking legitimate shots in Widow Cullen’s Well.

but it’s long closed. Mind you, the rate Sam Smiths are reopening pubs round me I wouldn’t write it off completely.

So Pub 4 was the little known Wig & Mitre,

which was deadly quiet despite a fine collection of “beers you’ve never heard of”, which apparently is what folk want these days.

Oh look, the eight sided glass returns. Octagonal glasses should expect to have a half point deduction,

and so the Milestone drops to 2.5.

In fairness, it’s a quirky place,

but you have to pop upstairs to appreciate the baronial theme.

There would be no baronial theme in our next pub.

      3. Martin,
        It’s four pubs, the Victoria, Treaty of Commerce, Queen in the West and Dog and Bone.
        And, despite the rain, it was much quicker getting round them than their four in Derbyshire.
        I’ve also used the Waggon and Horses in York and the Champion and the Kings Arms in Norwich this year. That’s after not drinking Batemans for ages with Progressive Beer Duty making them halve production and abandon the free trade.
