HALF A DOZEN PUBS IN EVERY GBG COUNTY. No. 50 – NORTH YORKSHIRE (PART II)

Will be there a dozen in South Yorkshire as well ? Or two dozen just in Sheffield ?

We shall find out together. But first, five more in the North of the White Rose county.

I’ll be honest; classic pubs in the heart of the Dales or the Moors didn’t jump out.

So you get three from the very edge of the county lines (the dotted one, that separate Durham, you know).

I wasn’t even completely sure that Middlesbrough wasn’t Durham; Stockton is.

This is the town of the Boro, proper art, and the family naan,

and the micropub.

Middlesbrough – The Chapel

Us tickers fell hard for the Chapel in GBG23, as much for the welcome and diversity of custom as the impeccable beer.

The best advert for the Boro since Juninho.

And this series is for the tourist, sometimes adventurous, sometimes happy with the obvious.

Tan Hill Inn

The Tan Hill will delight all except those who can’t find a way there on public transport, particularly the polite society who love queueing in pubs and saying “Excuse me” and “NO ! I’ll pay“.

It took an eternity to get in the Guide, and it certainly has its detractors, but I warmed to it. Quite literally as Mrs RM nabbed a seat almost on the fire.

opposite a bloke who couldn’t say “No” to Mrs RM’s request to share but would certainly have complained to Mumsnet if he’d been a she.

It may have been the altitude, but that beer was magic.

Another slightly upmarket pub next, and only in North Yorkshire courtesy of being the right side of the bridge.

Piercebridge – The George

In truth, the George is here because of the Grandfather’s clock that has earned that post 10,000 view in South Korea,

but having just reopened the Black Sheep and the parmos are fantastic.

There was some disgruntlement at the lack of a Skipton entry in the first half of this post, and I dislike disgruntlement almost as much as tasters.

And Skipton is awash with tourists all year round, mainly there for J. Stanforth’s warm pork pies (have two).

Skipton – Sound Bar

I’d have picked the Narrow Boat, but the Sound Bar was fantastic on my visit,

sell Dylan albums and has a winning sense of humour.

It’s also moved location to a bigger premises again, causing you confusion and me a need to revisit. Which is no hardship.

—–

And to end the five a journey to the Hambleton, home of Duck a l’orange, blokes in tweed, and £5 pints.

Stillington – White Bear

But not in Stillington, where the White Bear is full of genteel diners and robust drinkers at 20 to 2.

That top pic is pure clickbait.

Despite all the signs, this isn’t a Sam Smiths. When I visited the house beer seemed to be Rudgate at a staggeringly cheap £2.34 (2019).

A racegoers pub.

I’ve got Thistlecrack “

Sorry to hear that John

More North Yorkshire suggestions from you, please.

  1. Some cracking choices Martin. I loved my overnight stay at Tan Hill Inn, especially the massive row the couple running the place were having in the kitchen while preparing our breakfast.
Yes and the Sound Bar yet another great choice in Skipton.
But my favourite has to be the Craven Arms in Appletreewick. Sitting outside in the summer and unpicking the geology of the dales is one of the great joys of life.

  2. A few from me. George at Hubberholme for top quality beers and consistently lovely welcome; Buck at Buckden for always being there to refuel us at the end of a tough day’s walking; Red Lion at Langthwaite for changing our halves and insisting that I also drank the first half out of the new cask; Bridge at Grinton because it was there and perfect when we were forced to flee the petrol station fire in Richmond; Queens Arms at Litton for a young couple and a brewer round the back, all trying hard and doing a good job on all fronts. Best stop now….must get up there soon.

      1. Pumps 10. Arrive at mate’s holiday home, unload car. Smell of smoke, firemen running round connecting hoses to fire hydrants. Policeman knocks on door, five minutes to evacuation, reload car. Use extensive knowledge of YDNP pubs. Pint in Reeth, then Grinton for perfect pints of Cafe Amsterdam and excellent nosebag. Eventually let back into Richmond.

      1. it’s not cheap, but it means you get a better class of people from Boro than those who jumped on the £2 escape bus to Whitby!

i should point out I’m in Stockton Le Tees ..

Being uninterested in these things…I care not if it is in the GBG or not. The only thing lacking is company – it’s so isolated you’re stuck here on the Olde P or Landlord..or guests..

    1. And I can see why. He didn’t like the famous Queen’s Head in Newton, either. And I’d prefer a night in Middlesborough. But I think a visitor to the region (as long as they has a car) would appreciate it for what it is.

      1. People drive there in bad weather absolutely for that purpose, Martin.

Others – of different intent – optimistically use Heathrow, etc., on the other hand.

      2. Eight days ago I only had eighty minutes in Middlesbrough, time for the ex-Tim’s Isaac Wilson and then the Zetland when it opened.

    2. He’s an odd character*, but I agree with him on this score (and liking Blink182 type stuff) . Found it a bit unwelcoming although I will point out this was many years ago. Maybe it needs a revisit.

      • having a poo in a pub is weird
