A THORN BETWEEN EIGHT ROSES

December 2023. Milton. Cambridge.

Back to Mrs RM’s birthday, and an actual birthday meal not involving a pint and nuts.

Mrs RM had just that week said to some mates in Waterbeach “Fancy a pint nice meal Sunday night” and, unbelievably, all eight of them had said was “OK then“. The chances of that happening on Mumsnet World are approximately 0.033%.

All I had to do was taxi four of them to the Brewers (the fit German walked, obvs).

The Brewers has lost its “Jolly”,

but gone even more gastro than when I last came here with James in 2020.

Milton is back up to four (4) pubs now, and the Brewers is the smartest, and the one with the motel rooms. We entered from the rear,

so I could bring you the rare sight of the defrocked Cask Marque pub.

Blimey.

Never mind, I wasn’t going to be drinking.

Oh, forgot to say. Mrs RM had demanded my presence.

As the sole male perched on a side table at the end of a table of eight women, some of whom were determined to pull crackers with dreadful jokes inside.

It’ll make a great blog post” she said.

You know you want to” she said. I wasn’t sure I did.

But I do what I’m told on Mrs RM, just like Meatloaf. Even if it involves something as chintzy as the Brewers dining room.

I’ll test the beer for you” says Mrs RM.

What beers have you got ?” she asks the waitress.

We’ve got Estrella, and Guinness, and…

Do you have any real ales ?”

Oh, they’re ales, you asked about beers“. It was a fair point. Good job she didn’t ask for craft.

One other lady had a pint of the Lacons as well (OK, I think). I think it might have been cheaper than a pint of coke.

I had a lovely night, chatting with intelligent female company about German trains and Waterbeach takeaways, and the Sunday roast was superb, particularly the cauliflower cheese.

We were sat for nearly 3 hours, and as we stood up at 8:30pm we realised we were the last to leave, with not a single drinker in the bar next door. It’s no wonder so many pubs close for the night when the last Sunday roast is finished.
