…AND A NIGHT OUT IN SHEFFIELD (PART 377 – THE CIDER HOLE)

3rd February 2023.

Mrs RM has just sent me this photo from the first night of her IT assignment in Eindhoven. Yes, I am jealous.

Back home in Sheffield for the first time in a week I thought I’d better drag the hardworking IT consultant out for a night on the town; it’s what we moved north for.

The first Friday of the month means Peddler Market, Kelham’s giant indoor market, but Mrs RM avoided the youthful hordes and headed for the comforting middle-aged warmth of Ossett’s Bao bun pub.

A year from launch classy SALT was ticking over nicely with gentlefolk and “ladies sharing a bottle of Prosecco“, and there was decent cask turnover ensuring cool beer (NBSS 3+) across a range that would get you in the GBG anywhere north of Blackpool.

And those Bao Buns are far better than the ones at the North Bars.

Time for something completely different next. The Cider Hole peeps out from the container park of Krynkl along the A61 into town,

Three floors of luminous lights,

barbers, a Michelin star restaurants, yoga (probably hot), a cocktail bar we walked in and straight out of, and an urban microcidery.

Which had never seemed to be open when we were around before. The Halton Turner of the North ?, I wondered.

This is the seating in the Cider Hole;

Yes, it looks more sauna than microbar, with records, Hi-Fi and cider making kit at the entrance.

Possibly the smallest comedy venue in Sheffield, too.

Lovely people, though their own cider won’t be ready till March so we had one of those dreaded flights, all good, and some Sussex wine as we effectively joined Sheffield’s middle classes.

“I’m still hungry” said Mrs RM.
