GOOD NEWS FOR CURRY CONNOISSEURS AHEAD OF THE SHEFFIELD CAMRA AGM

22nd January 2023.

A curry special for the Southworths, who appreciate this sort of thing.

As does Curry Heute, whose take on Sheffield hasn’t had great things to say about our curry scene over the years, bar the little Apna Style.

We have great Asian food here, and proper pub food under a tenner, and better Bao buns than the Mancs, but the lack of a stand-out Indian (well, Pakistan or Bangladeshi) place has been a bit of a sore point.

But, after working up an appetite walking industrial Sheffield,

and enjoying a better sunset than you get in the Fens,

I typed “curry” into Google and up came “Curry Spoon” in Hillsborough.

Never heard of it, and only 16 minutes walk.

If it’s closed, well, you can get Chicken Jalfrezi from the Spoons for £9.70, with a pint of Punk thrown in.

It was open till 9 on Sunday, and pleased to see us. Having opened that month, they needed the reviews as much as the custom. As you can see above, they’re getting 5/5 virtually every time.

This was classic cooking, great constituency, full of flavour. Proper pickles tray, gorgeously sweet Peshwari naan. As good as Leek.

My advice is to finish off your post CAMRA 2023 AGM crawl here, never drink on a full stomach.

      1. As I look at places in the region, I see curry houses branching out from Manchester and Bradford to places like Halifax and York. Interesting to me that I don’t see that with Sheffield at all.

      1. So – I’ve only the haziest about how this ticking malarkey works – if a pub briefly rises above the GBG horizon in say 1996, and you tick it, then does that mean that you don’t need to do it if it reappears in 2023? Did you do The Halfway like that?
