Eagle-eyed readers (none of you, apparently) will have noted I marked Tuxford on the map showing my well-worn route home back to Waterbeach via Stamford the other day.
I’ve made you a nicer map, showing the second section of the Great North Road.
Every town, except Tuxford.
Crusty Cob’s stunning paninis are definitely better, but not necessarily healthier.
Tuxford has the joy of the A1 roaring above its head, and the A6075 snaking quietly through its middle.

No GBG pubs in my ticking life, though, and to be honest The Sun looks a bit workaday. Oh, and it’s keg.
There was another pub over the road which probably did Bass from the barrel and Cloudwater, but the Newcastle Arms is now an art gallery, that afore-mentioned horse museum, and a tourist information hotspot.
If it had been open I’d have asked why the population increased by 133 in the first decade of the century, and whether any residents were washed away by the BRAPA accident down the road at Newark Northgate more recently.
Tuxford actually closed their railway station specifically to deprive Simon of an opportunity to disgrace himself here, but retained the lock-up just in cases. Hmm, make a nice micro.
It’s a pleasant place, though “market town” rather oversells it
There’s a gorgeous church,
and Read Grammar School would make a perfect Brunning & Price/Spoons/microbrewery tap.
Apparently there’s another pub in Tuxford, but the Fountain is SO far east of town I didn’t get there, having to stop at the Costcutter for a bottle of raspberry Oasis and a Milky Bar.
That’s how exhausting not visiting pubs is, you know.
And now I read on What Pub’s entry for the Fountain. “This pub is a shock to the system when you walk in.” I’ll have to go back, won’t I ?

I never delete posts. That was the Fontain, apparently, named after Juste Fontain, top scorer with 13 at the 1958 World Cup.

I’m always amazed how many towns like this exist in England. Looks quite charming. What was it missing that prevented it from being a true market town?

If there is one it’s not very big!

A small town like this would have had a market two or three times a week, maybe. But long distance transport and central distribution have mostly put paid to markets in places like Tuxford.

I’ll take a sandwich over something from McDonald’s any day. Did you know there’s a chain of sandwich shops over here called The Earl of Sandwich? Think I read somewhere that the descendants of the actual Earl licensed their name to them. My daughter had one of their sandwiches and said it was the best she’d ever had. 🙂

No, didn’t know that. https://www.earlofsandwichusa.com/menu/ looks a bit like Subway, which I actually liked till I was told their bread was made out of 100% sugar or something.
I think they were conned by the descendants of the Earl as he had no rights to that name !

I take it back, it was ACTUALLY founded by the 11th Earl of Sandwich ! Have you seen that sign in Kent with “Ham” and “Sandwich” on the same sign ?

Makes you wonder if the Earl of Sandwich realized within his lifetime what it was that he would be solely remembered for. Hey, if you can only make a single contribution to human civilization, that’s not a bad one, really!
