HYTHE AND SEEK

October 2026. Hythe. Kent.

I’ll be spending a fair bit of time in Rye, and while East Sussex and Kent GBG are fully pinked, I’ll enjoy doing a deep dive (ugh) into lesser known coastal towns like Hythe.

15,000 souls and 150,000 seagulls, a town hugging the coast and the Royal Military Canal.

A flying visit, so we park next to the Tin Tabernacle (home to a pyschic fair),

leave the pubs for another day,

and set off in search of the ossuary.

Hythe is a quaint town, where news travels slowly.

The residents of Hythe will be delighted to learn that the 1961 application to join the EC was turned down by the spoil-sport French.

Some attractive pub frontages,

but no obvious classic pubs on the high street, where the superb (and healthy) lunch at Root was the closest Hythe gets in feel to Rye.

The highlight of our stop should have been St Leonard’s,

but the ossuary was closed while they clean the bones.

We enjoyed an impromptu organ recital, though,

and I’ll give a TOP prize to any reader who can identify that tune.

Chat GPT couldn’t, so I guess us humans are safe from AI for a week or two yet.
