EAST SUSSEX HAS FALLEN

October 2026. Glynde. East Sussex.

Down in Rye, a man’s thoughts turn to finding new pubs to colour in on the new Beer Guide.

Thrillingly, my final East Sussex tick is also in a tiny place I’ve never been to before, though I suspect you’ve heard of it. It’s possible my father-in-law has sung in its most famous building.

Steamworks in (I presume) the cosy  old waiting room at Glynde station will sell you a pint and a bacon butty at 10am, all week.

But how good is the beer at 10am on a Monday in a place folk only visit to watch “The Barber of Seville” on a Friday night ?

Really VERY GOOD Long Man (don’t worry, there’ll be Harvey’s soon enough), and a fine collection of brewery and football tat.

Almost bargain prices, too. Pint, coffee, big slices of Bakewell tart and fudge brownie for £12.25.

And the soundtrack will thrill visitors of a certain vintage.

Bob, Cat/Yusuf, Neil, Don. Perfect.

Mrs RM urges me to take a photo of the Halloween/GBG feature, and asks me what that pub is on the cover.

“It’s the one you wrote about for my blog dear“.

  1. I had an excellent lunch there about a year ago. Interestingly their website says that they don’t open on Mondays but luckily CAMRA knows better. The Trevor Arms just outside the station is also very good.

  2. I always thought that our Bob was having a laugh with that pic. He’d know that plenty would realise that one doesn’t usually play chords on a bass guitar…

And when a child, I always thought that Andhovealbion was an unusual name for a football side, even Brighton’s.

Have I figured out how to leave my name without using a cod email address? We’ll see. (WP says that my own “belongs” to a WP account and insists that I log in using that. It then tells me that the account is deleted, which it is. Here’s me thinking that my email address belongs to me, too.)
