September 2026. Corby Glen. Lincolnshire.

I really have nothing to complain about in life, but last weekend was an example of the stresses and tensions of a typical week.
Getting “home” on Saturday from a the weekly 6 hour visit to see Dad in his Waterbeach care home, Mrs RM was deep into conversations with her own parents about care needs, and with just time to take the washing in we were heading straight back down the A1 to Kent.

And just time for a Sunday lunch stop in Corby Glen’s Fighting Cocks, one of the eight Lincolnshire Guide newbies. A pretty village, as you’ll see from my New Year’s Day visit.

Entry to the rear with a step like that,

into a typically unfussy Bateman village dining pub.

There’s a wait for lunch, which at this stage is pork roast or nothing, so time for Mrs RM to have a couple of pints of XXXB.

Who are these people who sip beer ?

There’s a nice community feel, cheerful young staff, free meals for children (I’m too old, apparently),

and an impressive (and prominent) menu for the non-drinker.

Oddly, Mrs RM doesn’t seem at all bothered by the AI graphics so exercising CAMRA Discourse at the moment.
There’s families, ladies on their own, and a fair number of dogs, enjoying a soundtrack that reaches, but never quite goes past, 1987.
I’m fairly scathing about Lincolnshire’s Beer Guide entries on here (frankly, there’s too many of them), but the one you thing do get, particularly south of the A52, is a good Sunday roast with fresh veg.

I mean, if you can’t get fresh veg on the edge of Fens where can you ? But this is a well cooked plate that almost compensates for the calories in the Crispy Beef and Singapore Rice the night before.
Only £12.95 your Sunday roast, an all-time bargain.
It’s roast parsnips that make a proper Sunday lunch.
I’ve been having them aplenty with my carvery in the Kings Head but no more as the Sunday buses for Lichfield only lasted a year despite them being far better used than the weekday ones for Uttoxeter.

Probably being used by too many people with elderly persons’ bus passes, Paul. If more paying passengers turned up it might be running yet. But if we had to pay for the bus there’s be less money to keep the pubs open.

You slightly misread that menu, it’s actually offering ‘Eat kids free”, as the pub is obviously populated by retired gentlefolk who have voted to keep the establishment child-free.

I think you’re getting confused with population practices in Elgin, Scott.
