July 2026. Keighley.

Just two (2) long-standing Beer Guide entries for Keighley; the upmarket dining of the Tim Taylor tap and the bare boards boozing of the Brown Cow, tucked away on cobbles just off the main drag.

A few changes of landlord since my last vist in 2017, when I named it in the prestigious RM Top 100 (No. 371 I think), and I couldn’t see any change, bar a dominance of J W Lees.

When in Yorkshire, a man should drink Yorkshire beer, in this case Goose Eye in an Ossett glass.

Too many beers ? Perhaps, but this is a cask drinkers pub and a pint under four quid is always getting decent turnover, so this is a VERY GOOD pint.
A quick look at the opinions of the estimable Pubs Galore topers is instructional.

I do recall conversations about police matters in 2017, but today the conversations (mostly about hosepipe bans) at the bar were exemplary, helped by a cheery star of a barmaid.
I chose a seat near the unnamed star of the house.

A very suburban Huddersfield type of pub, getting busier by the minute from a 4pm opening. Young lads come in and order Inchs and Cruzcampo for the benches outside, so perhaps not such a “CAMRA pub” as you might fear.

And that was Keighley, bar a quick look at (reputedly) Yorkshire’s largest textile mill,

and the centre of the local arson industry.

Beauty. Bench seating, carpet, great ales – can fault it.

“When in Yorkshire, a man should drink Yorkshire beer,” – when I was in the Kelham Island Tavern the other week the barmaid told me off for ordering Barnsley bitter. “You’re not having a Sheffield beer?”
