April 2026. Saltburn-by-the-Sea.

I visited the Cleveland coast in last weekend’s heatwave, or at least that’s what it felt like with the radiant heat stronger than the air temperature.
My irritating 3pm GBG opener (go on, guess what it is) meant half a day to kill by the seaside, admiring Saltburn’s floral displays,

the odd bit of pub Victoriana (the only Guide pub is the sports club and not much opens before 5),

and the canoli at Cannoli corner.

It gets a fair crowd of gentlefolk from Middlesbrough for its cafes, and a good number of surfers; it’s the Porthcawl of the North (though Porthcawl has Bass).

One of the most exciting things to do in Saltburn is to search for the hidden Gents at the station. When you find the grafitti left by Traveldawg you’re there, and can then return to Bishop (Auckland, the end of the line).

I took the scenic route through Hazel Grove’s gorgeous wooded valley west towards Marske,

which as you’ll remember is staking a claim as a craft beer centre with its bars and brewery with a tap in Leeds.

Saltburn and Marske looked immaculate, free of litter and dog mess, and the walk back along the coast with the sea mist was a joy.

Saltburn’s chalets are cheaper than in Southwold,

though gentlefolk may be deterred from visiting due to the continued closure of the funicular back to town.

The good folk of Bridgnorth will sympathise.
I well remember getting in the Victoria with a 1984 night in Saltburn. That was the same week as my first ever pint in Whitby. My third and more is planned for next week.
Not only does Bridgnorth have the only INLAND cliff railway but it also runs between TWO towns.

That is true about Bridgnorth, Paul. It also has excellent pubs in both.

Yes indeed. Bridgnorth is probably worth returning to now I have a bus pass, that Severn Valley Railway being rather more expensive than national rail ( Euston and back yesterday for £26.60 with Delay Repay )

Make sure that you get in Saltburn Cricket Club. It’s currently Cleveland CAMRA Club of the Season and always has three beers on in excellent condition. They always have a dark beer on – currently Dark Munro. Full Circle Best Bitter is also on at the moment.

Love Saltburn, went with my Darlo pals a few years back – had a paddle, cliff ride and a lunch in a hippy place.
