November 2025. North Walsham. Norfolk.

Obviously if this were a beer blog I’d have followed my new North Walsham tick with a return to the excellent Hop, but ChatGPT tells me that 137.2% of my blog views are referrals from ClassicChurches.com, and ChatGPT is 100% fallible.

It’s also rude to walk past an open church, unless you’re convinced the volunteers are going to bombard you with “history”.
The most notable feature at St Nicholas is the collapsed tower,

the catastrophe pushing the Great Mustard Tree Drought of 1724 onto Page 2 of the Eastern Daily Press (About Anglia were too busy covering Norwich City’s 3-5-2 formation and midfield overload).

Rather lovely, proving that rural Suffolk doesn’t have all the best churches.

I’m on my own, though there is a bit of rustling in the office, so I focus on the hits; the stained glass,

the Paston tomb,

and the medieval paintings,

which weren’t actually much older than the chicken nuggets I unadvisedly bought from Morrisons Local on the dash back to the station.
Lovely church – are you sure it’s only NCSS 3.5? I was hoping for some more shots of the knapped flints on the outer walls. Never mind, the North Walsham Town FC scarf that the bishop was wearing was pretty classy.

“November 2025. North Walsham. Norfolk.”
(looks up)
He’s standing on someone’s shoulders under that, isn’t he.
“but ChatGPT tells me that 137.2% of my blog views are referrals from ClassicChurches.com, and ChatGPT is 100% fallible.”
I call… shenanigans.
“It’s also rude to walk past an open church, unless you’re convinced the volunteers are going to bombard you with “history”.”
You used that in pic in ‘Next Stop, North Walsham’.
“The most notable feature at St Nicholas is the collapsed tower,”
Blimey. That looks like my collapsed prostate.
(which hasn’t happened yet!)
“(About Anglia were too busy covering Norwich City’s 3-5-2 formation and midfield overload).”
Crikey. You nicked that from ‘Next Stop, North Walsham’ as well!
“so I focus on the hits; the stained glass,”
(looks down)
There’s a story in there somewhere.
“the Panton tomb,”
Wasn’t that turned into a musical?
(the setting was changed to an opera, for some reason)
“which weren’t actually much older than the chicken nuggets I unadvisedly bought from Morrisons Local on the dash back to the station.”
Blimey. There’s a story in THERE somewhere!
Cheers

Yes, I used that pic as a teaser when I promised a later post on the church. All of life makes sense.
Our supermarkets often have a small hot food section with things like sausage rolls, hash browns and chicken nuggets. By 4:30 pm those nuggets had been sitting under a little heater for 8 hours. But sometimes you need something other than a hot sandwich (I don’t have cooking facilities in Waterbeach).

Ah, now I understand on the whole nugget thing. And yup, you’re rolling the dice with those at the end of the day.

The only alternative in those sort of market towns is a kebab or huge portion of chips from the takeaway. It’s actually quite hard to get a warm snack.

Just looked it up. With a pop of 12K that’s understandable.

I think, generally it is outside of sit down places, pubs don’t tend to have a hot counter with pies anymore, if they ever did.
We’re seeing a lot of chicken tender types places pop in the UK, imported from the States e.g. Popeyes.

Popeyes is making inroads into Canada as well. Just FYI, but I did read that they can sell cheaper because they get the cheaper bits of chicken. 😉

I’ve used the St Nicholas Church in Newport, but not as often as the Honeysuckle or the Pheasant.
And have only passed through North Walsham, probably about a dozen times from 1987 to last year.

Yes, North Walsham is easily bypassed.
In a similar vein nearby Aylsham has two new Beer Guide entries this year but no railway station (like Dereham where our friend Charles lives) and you know my views on busses.

Yes Martin, and the lovely British Transport Films 1962 “John Betjeman Goes By Train” suggests how easily you could have got about Norfolk were you not born far too late.
( Betjeman has just shown up on spellchecker as Beatlemania. NEVER trust computers. He must be turning in his grave )

Yes I have, and not the cheapest of London pubs if I remember correctly.
