THE TETLEY

August 2025. Leeds.

Rail journeys via Leeds always involve a wait of between 32 and 54 minutes, just long enough to be irritating.Unless you nip out the southern entrance (the one with the water taxi) for a pint.

Always best to stride confidently towards a target pub you decide on at the very last moment, just so you can tell Will it only takes 6 minutes to reach The Tetley, via “Hibiscus Rising”,

and Salem Place.

I can only assume I made the Tetley in 6 minutes by adopting what is known as the “Paul Mudge approach to road crossings“.

Shamefully, this is my first visit to Tetleyland (the old offices), which would have made a great name for a 70s theme park.

Google says “Contemporary art gallery complex in an art deco former brewery HQ, with exhibitions, bar & dining“, which rather tells you how pubby this Kirkstall pub is.

The office relics are a highlight,

the lifts a design classic.

With that focus on art and afternoon tea it’s more akin to Kirkstall’s own tap, all breweriana overload, than the Cardigan Arms.

Early reviews of the Tetley have felt a bit half-hearted. Are folk bored with Kirkstall already ?

We shouldn’t be. The Three Swords here was a joy, cool and sherberty, even though sherberty isn’t a real word or Untappd description. NBSS 4, possibly 4.5.

The tat may be nostalgic,

but the soundtrack is modern (Caribou), and although I never feel comfortable with the diner style seating,

I reckon the Tet is good enough to come back for a pie and pint between trains.

Probably try the Tetley Bitter next time, the lacings on that should be great.

I genuinely have no idea who brews Tetley this week.

  1. To my shame I dont know what apology for Tetleys is brewed now, and I speak as a former director of Tetley Walker ( cue shouts of that’s not proper Tetley) . I think you’ll find it’s more proper than what’s happened over the last 30 years.

  2. That Three Swords certainly looks good. I’m going to Leeds this Thursday to drink exclusively Kirkstall Three Swords, in about six pubs including the brewery tap.

Is that photo of the pie taken with the permission of its owner? Or did you manage a personal best for pie eating as well as the six-minute dash from Leeds Station to The Tetley? (I’m sure that others want to know but they’re all too polite to ask.)

  3. That pint of Three Swords looks inviting, as does the πŸ₯§. Good to see too, that the Tetley office block has been re-purposed.

These things, plus others, all point to a trip to Leeds being long overdue!
