July 2025. Gurnett. Macclesfield.

“Gurnett ? Never heard of it“. Neither had I before the new GBG introduced Ye Olde King’s Head to the world.
I’d fancied coming here on the Old Codgers Macclesfield Meander last month, with it just a mile south along the canal,

but the company from the Two Mudge(i)es and Frome Jon was so good I hadn’t the heart to abandon them at Spoons.
But our overnighter at Sutton Hall saw us a mere 5 minutes walk from the canal housing the King’s Head.

Mum and Dad owned a narrow boat on the Cam. I bashed it once, near the Pike & Eel. I shan’t be tempted to a life on the water,

even with so many great and unpretentious canalside pubs.

This one in Gurnett, which I’m still not convinced is any more than a canal halt, is a corker.

Old enough to be visually interesting, unfussy enough to not be Brunning & Price.

You’re greeted by “9 to 5“, Dolly not Sheena, a track which always raised the question why Americans work short hours but get no holidays.
Oh, a lot of beers.

Nothing wrong with having any of those, it’s just five is too many, reflecting in a Bass (NBSS 3) that lacks the crispness that makes us seek out the πΊ.

Mrs RM has another pint of Storm that’s again a winner, and we admire a pub with superb staff and banter at the bar.
Amazingly, those dogs don’t make a dash for Mrs RM.

Super comfy seating, KC & the Sunshine Band and Wham ! played a couple of notches too low on the volume dial, and some instructional material on how to use the loos.

What more do you need ?.

Good to see you on the right side of the hill!
If you make it back into Macc, the Bollington Brewery Tap and the Wharf are worth a visit.
Cheers!

I’m sure I’ll be back in Macc soon enough ! Glad the Wharf re-opened, and I walked past the Dolphin that had also just re-opened that week !
