THE JOY OF FINDING A SEAT IN THE SNUG AT THE CROWN POSADA

June 2025. Newcastle upon Tyne.

There’s three (3) things Mrs RM is very sure about when it comes to pubs and beer. “Beer should taste like beer“, “Ugh, that’s off” (it’s supposed to be like that, Mrs RM) and in Newcastle you MUST go to the Crown Posada.

And of course, as so often, Mrs RM was right. This is the pub you must by law show visitors, just as we took our the octogenarian in-laws here in 2023.

It was packed out then; now on a Friday lunchtime in June it’s a pubby cathedral of peace and quiet, and Mrs RM dives for the near empty snug by the door,

while Jane goes “Ooh“.

I’d been a bit grumpy about the Posada when it ditched the Bass, but today the Ossett Plague Porter and White Rat were gorgeously cool in the heat (NBSS 3.5/4).

I said that snug was “near” empty. Mrs RM had struck up a conversation with a young Belfast lad working in Edinburgh on a pub crawl in Toon.

So nice to be chatting Crown Liquors Saloon and Halfway House rather than World War III.

  1. What a lovely looking pub. One thing that struck (ignorant) me is that that lamp from Much Wenlock. I’d imagine, particularly in such an industrious part of the world, that they wouldn’t have had to go so far to source such things.

    1. The best of Much Wenlock for me is the 1960 Gaskell and Chambers handpumps in the Gaskell Arms.
All most visitors are interested in though is the Olympic Games, and we get more than enough of that every four years.

  2. Having resurrected my dad’s old bike and worked out a relatively traffic-free route to the industrial estate, I visited Black Cloak Brewery Tap Room in Denbigh last night (a white-painted room with fairy lights if it excited you). As much as it pains me to bundle together Chester and north Wales, if they all make the new GBG, this place, Polly’s in Mold and the new Station Tap in Chester would do a good day out for the hardcore tickers.

I was at the Station Tap today, getting served at 11:00 on the dot, watching to soon-to-be coke’d-up racegoers being pick off by the sniffer dogs at the entrance. Glorious.
