“Reserved for the Coldstreams V.I.P.”. THE PARK TAVERN, CHICHESTER

February 2025. Chichester.

I won’t declare Chichester a great pub town on the basis of our flying visit to “Meet the Southworths” last week, but Dave and Joan had done a fair bit of research in their extended stay, in-between P trips to the Pallant, Petworth and Pompey,

and confidently declared The Park the best in town.

Certainly, it’s got the best blue plaque.

A Fullers pub so good they’ve named the recreational area opposite after it,

the Park has yo-yo’d in and out of the Beer Guide over the years, a fact the upmarket drinking custom will be oblivious to.

If only all Americans could make decisions as well as Dave,

confidently picking the revelatory HSB from a range where that Butcombe seems completely superfluous.

Again, Northern-style heads on cool, foamy pints (NBSS 3.5). Wait till they discover the autovac.

The menu says;

Rustic home-made food, prepared to order by our team of chefs. Choose from such items as Sussex Charmer, arancini with truffle mayo , grilled artichokes with sourdough and roasted peppers or from our mains twice cooked pork belly, fondant potatoes with savoy cabbage and apple sauce or our very popular slow cooked beef brisket with mash and burnt ends“.

my first sighting of burnt ends in years, but before the early evening dining rush this felt a civilised drinkers pub.

So a shame we had to spoil the atmosphere.

An hour later and we’d have been stealing a table reserved for V.I.P.s,

and one should NEVER start a fight with the Coldstreams.

  1. ..out of that line up – and round here where every 2 pubs out of 3 are Fullers, the Butcombe is far from superfluous, trust me..
