WALKLEY’S WOBBLY DAGGER – SLIGHT RETURN

January 2025. Walkley. Sheffield.

It’s good to be back in Sheffield for a few days, even if most of the time is spent planning Mum’s funeral, apologising to folk for not letting them know earlier, and “activating” powers of attorney for Dad.

And it’s good to have a Friday night out in our local suburb of Walkley,

skipping the GBG joys of the Blake, Blind Monkey and Raven in favour of two (2) neighbourhood shop conversions.

The Wobbly Dagger is run by Mrs RM’s hairdresser (“your hair looks nice Mrs RM“, I say), built into the shell of a Walkley butchers, and is never getting mistaken for a micropub.

Every neighbourhood high street needs a classy cocktail bar, but they at least have a fridge with a local beer now,

a can of Abbeydale Vocation allowing me the privilege of being the first to check-in a beer on Untappd.

There’s couples and singles on laptops, and ladies at the start of a night out that will no doubt end in heartache, and a suitably mid-80s soundtrack.

And there’s also now Italian pizza, absolutely gorgeous and with a free glass of wine thrown in.

And you’ll know what happens when you mix grain with grape…

  1. “built into the shell of a Walkley butchers” reminds me of a wonderful brewery tap built into the shell of Brierley Hill butchers long ago, Mild £2.60 a pint and a proper meal for a fiver. I don’t think a similar venture in Herne Bay has been as successful.
