MINT ! A WALK ROUND RYE

November 2024. Rye.

Time for a breather, 20 minutes walk from The Mint away from the pubs,

time for a bit of culture.

In 2016, cult (sure that’s the word) pub blogger Retired Martin titled his post “Rye – The Well of Low NBSS“, a play on Radclyffe Hall’s finest work*, and scandalously failed to receive the “Best Blog Title Award”.

I reckon you could do a post a day just on Rye’s quirky houses,

with a focus on the many independent businesses such as the sweet shop (top) Kentish Paul and I visited for sustenance before our epic climb of the church tower,

and the record shop selling cult vinyls. I was given that Pinky and Perky classic for my 6th birthday (22/12).

Perhaps it’s geography and transport, perhaps it’s the perception of Rye as “a bit twee and overpriced“, but I’m always surprised the town isn’t completely overrun with UK day-trippers pointing cameras at old doors.

But that’s OK. Mrs RM gets to take her pics without having to airbrush out irritating people,

these little fellas apart,

and at the castle, only one question remains.

Ypres Castle or not ?

Not this time, Jeff. Perhaps that’s the only problem with one the UK’s top, top, pubs. It’s just too good, and you’d never leave without a sore head.

We pressed on, Mrs RM urging me to get out of the way of the timber,

and admired the view back to the harbour.

And then contemplated that 4th pint (Mrs RM – 2nd half).

*So I hear. I’ve never read it.
