SELF-SERVE CRAFT BEER, LISBON STYLE

March 2024. Lisbon. Portugal.

10 minutes from Nepal curry to dump our bags an hour ahead of check-in at our “Ambiente” hostel,

where the decor said anything but “hostel”,

and then a steep uphill walk (7 hills, just like Sheffield) to the inevitable craft beer bar.

It’s the frescoes that are the star in Lisbon. This one reminded me of a famous Manchester pub;

can you tell which one ?

A mile of Nepalese cafes and Ramen houses in the main, with great (un-graffitied) art on the tower block, too,

and Canil at least had some attractive chandeliers to soften the “beer house” feel.

What you can’t see in these photos is the Red Hot Chili Peppers soundtrack; their entire Greatest Hits.

Mrs RM was a bit disappointed I resisted the self-serve craft beer machine last seen in Coalville,

I just knew that initial 10 euro loading would be gone in 30 seconds and she’d be back for more. Just halves of their Dry Stout and Punch Session IPA, both refreshing but rather thin.

Not sure I wanted to do many more of these beer bars, to be honest, though 47cl of Brew Dog Punk IPA was clearly calling my name.

  1. The Red Hot Chilli Peppers can’t beat Harry Belafonte’s torrid calypsos. Hang on, do I mean Kid Creole And The Coconuts can’t?

    (His “Somebody help me” quite knocks Donny Osmond’s in “Puppy Love” somewhere else too. You can reflect on where, exactly)
