THE CHAIN HOUSE, PRESTON

January 2024. Preston.

We (finally left) the Black Horse for our gig in Preston’s student-land, relatively bright and breezy as well as full of pastry, gelatinous jelly, pork and chilli jam.

Even the Old Black Bull looks appealing after an hour on the Old Tom.

Duncan had been recently and described the Chain House tap as “from the urban chic school of taps, with 12 keg lines and 2 cask beers on as guests including a Peanut Butter Stout“. Sounds great, heh ?

To get there from Friargate you head up the cobbled lane just before the Sun, the Thwaites pub Stafford Paul stays in while in town.

Perhaps Chain House isn’t one for Paul’s tour of Proper Pubs of Preston,

being somewhat akin to Stafford’s Candid.

Excitingly, there’s cask,

as well as tumblers and T-shirts.

Great soundtrack, by the way;

Perhaps at this point I realised some sobriety was needed, and I returned to Mrs RM with a can of low alcohol pastry stout (OK, bit thin) from the fridge.

I don’t like sours” said Mrs RM.

So she had to put up with the Dancing Around In Circles, a pint of cask SO good it might be my Beer of the Month, if I make to 31 January.

Nick Drake gave way to Elvis Costello (“Alison”), Elvis to Jonathan,

The music, the beer, and the deodorant were all tremendous,

and sometimes that’s enough to help you overlook the fact you’re drinking in a shed.

    1. And certainly not the pub it was when I drank my first ever Boddingtons there on 22nd June 1973, not two months after my eighteenth birthday.
