THREE LITTLE BIRDS

November 2023. Waterbeach.

On Wednesday, Mrs RM came home from nigh on a month in Kent visiting her hospital-bound Dad, who is now in rehab in Sevenoaks. Any of you who have ever been to Sevenoaks, the Wilmslow of the South, will wonder what Michael has done to deserve this. I’ll take him down the pub when he’s truly home.

We had a night in Waterbeach, Chung Hwa and all, before heading back to Sheffield. The real robin came out to greet us in Dad’s garden.

Three Little Birds” is one my favourite tunes,

Singin′, “Don’t worry about a thing”
′Cause every little thing is gonna be alright

a line sang by Manchester City fans in their darkest hours, like when we only put six past United.

Talking of United, it was a joy to turn up at The Sun (Mrs RM insisted) at the conclusion of their capitulation in Turkey.

United still bring an older crowd out to the pub to watch their games on TV, though on Wednesday night the Sun’s lounge was packed with rugby players. I had no idea rugby was a thing in Fen Edge.

We had a chat with Landlady Helen, on the other side of the bar for a few minutes, and a few folk (Hi Ian and Tim) we hadn’t seen for a few years came up to (drunkenly) say hello. A second pint of Sea Fury seemed a good idea. at the time.

It’s good to have Mrs RM back. No man wants to go to the pub alone, not ALL the time, anyway.

Well done, Charlie’s Bar in Enniskillen.

    1. And a very pleasant few hours it was for five pubs, starting with the Tiger drinking well in the Sun and ending with a very rare Banks’s Mild in the Princess Royal.

  1. You are being very harsh on Sevenoaks, Martin. It’s got a lot going for it, with plenty of independent shops, a theatre, several excellent pubs, and is surrounded by some fine countryside.

It’s also been named by the ONS as the happiest place to live in Kent. 😀

  2. I was in Stafford’s Sun Inn on Saturday lunchtime but there was no Titanic Wreckage and I was told that it isn’t being brewed this winter.
I only stopped for a pint of Tiger as John and Sue who live very near to us happened to be there.

  3. Eileen thought that the 19 day cruise was too long, but it was only the last couple of days of the homeward stretch, that things began to drag.

It’s down to geography really, and when you consider we voyaged to the Greek islands and back, from the UK, it puts things into perspective. You also have to consider the distance from southern England to the Iberian peninsula before realising there’s a lot of relatively empty ocean in between – and that applies on the homeward voyage, as well as the outward one.

Amazing to think, as well, that you could fly to Crete or Kefalonia in around four hours.
