UP THE (SAWLEY) JUNCTION

November 2023. Long Eaton.

20,871 steps on this Sunday, as well as a county-completing GBG tick and a five goal thriller, so a good day in Long Eaton only slightly diminished by a dull walk back to the station.

If there was anything left to see in Long Eaton I’d have seen it…

The Corner Room (ex-Spoons) had Purity and Jaipur on the bar, possibly the two dullest beers imaginable,

and I’d rather have made a rapid return to Rowells,

or the York Chambers,

but I resisted all of those and contemplated a revisit to the Chinese takeaway. That’s what happens after three (3) pints.

A police investigation had been launched following a sighting of Christmas decorations installed before December,

but my hopes for a conviction are slim.

I knew I didn’t really need a half in the GBG Sawley Junction before the train back to Sheffield,

but would YOU rather spend 10 minutes in the warm pub or on a cold rail platform ?

I’d said I’d revisit the Junction post-Covid restrictions, but it barely felt more spacious and I was forced to sit on high stool with a half of Pentrich x Neon Truckosauras, which sounds exciting till you see what I should have had;

Yes, Dundee’s Thundercurrant at £9.60 a pint would have been the purist’s choice, and tells you how high the Junction pitches its craft offer.

A murky beer stood on the ledge between me and a smartly dressed lady appeared unclaimed. “Is that….yours ?” she asked. After my error of judgement in the Pomona Tap I have learned my lesson about stealing beer.

An impressive, rather than cosy place, and that’s OK. But forced to choose between these perches,

and the ones across the road in the Bell I know what I’d choose.

But at least those guys had a seat. 10 minutes later this was the scene on the 17:11 East Midlands service back to Sheffield.

It’s a good job no-one uses trains anymore.

  1. Jaipur and Proper Job are both beers I like and seem strangely similar to me. Nicely hopped; not overdone. I could drink three in a row no problem.
