BACK ON THE SMOOTH IN THE GLEADLESS VALLEY

November 2023. Sheffield.

I’ve only spent 4 days at “home” in Sheff this month, which is hardly enough time to do the laundry, hoover the cobwebs, and pretend to do the garden (whatever that means).

No new GBG pubs close by now, but by Monday I really had to get out and stretch the legs with a walk into the eastern suburbs.

Only 1:22 hours walk to the Punch Bowl, or 6 minutes from Manor Top tram stop. I took the latter option, and won’t be adding this to my lucrative “ALL THE PUBS IN SHEFFIELD ON FOOT” series. At least while you’re looking.

Actually, I had no plans to visit the Punch Bowl when I bought the tram Day Rider; I just had a vague notion to go to the end of the blue line and see what happened. I got as far as Gleadless.

They really need to extend that tram line to somewhere interesting like Carluke.

Mosborough has a craft beer bar I’d never been to, bit surprising it failed to Guide this year. But it was a stiff walk from any of the stops, and I was distracted by the flying lion at Manor Top.

It’s not that impressive a flying lion. I mean, I’ve seen the steampunk machine in Stockton. THAT’S impressive.

And the housing is “of a type” so to speak.

But the Punch Bowl looks great,

and both sign What Pub promised, or perhaps threatened, cask. Well, What Pub did until I updated Sheffield CAMRA with the reality;

It took the ever efficient What Pub lead five (5) minutes to add to east Sheffield’s stock of cask-less pubs,

which is also how long it took me to sink a sublime pint of John Smiths Smooth, practically as good as the never-seen real version (NJSSSS 4.5). You know how seriously I take the John’s.

£3.55 your perfect pint. AND you get “Take On Me” and “Summer of 69” to entertain you, and lovely staff who say “Bye” when you leave.

And best of all, I can’t see that Will has reviewed it for Pubs Galore. Win !

      1. A third of a century older but it’s lacking the Banks’s and heritage interior of Worcester’s Punch Bowl.

  1. Prefer “Summer 68” by Pink Floyd, to Bryan Adams’ one year later track. Not sure about the “John’s”, though, smooth or otherwise.

On a more serious note, Sheffield’s tram network looks quite extensive. I remember the short tram ride I took, with Will, last year. I couldn’t tell you where we boarded, or where we left the tram, but the fact I was able to use my bus pass, was a double bonus.

      1. The residents of prosperous suburbs seem to be the very core of The Drinking Classes in my experience, Paul.

They just don’t do it pubs so much, perhaps?
