THE PARLIAMENTARY TRAIN TO BRIGG

September 2023. Brigg.

2.5 hours in Brigg ? That’ll be seven (7) posts then.

On the Thursday I took Dad for a drive round the lesser-visited Fen east of Ely, taking in Shippea Hill, the least used railway station in 2015-16 (12 passengers in a year).

The very next day a hardy group comprising Will “Premier League”Hatter, “Jeff”, Mrs RM and I set off to Brigg on the daily parliamentary service from Sheffield.

Out at 09:54, back on the 13:49. Miss that one and you might be stuck in Brigg for 3 days. And NO-ONE wants that.

What Pub says 4 cask pubs;

Will and Jeff had two more in mind. Blimey.

A route through lesser known northern England,

the highlight the power stations just before Gainsborough.

Passing Kirton-in-Lindsey it occurred to me we could have stopped of there for 3 hours at the Queen’s Head and drunk Draught Bass till the one return train tipped up, but I was outvoted by Will 1:1.

632 people used Brigg station in 2021/22, so our arrival that Friday must have caused a stir.

Sadly, the promised micropub in the outbuilding just off the platform has still to be completed, or even started.

But five minutes later, we’d have a Spoons.

  1. Regarding parliamentary trains, coincidently yesterday while tidying up I found a little “Stockport – Stalybridge / Paytrain Guide / From 6 May 1983 until 13 May 1984” leaflet, so forty years old.
On weekdays there were thirteen trains outwards and fifteen back. The 22 minutes past midnight from Stalybridge even continued to Shrewsbury arriving at 3.03am.
Now I think it’s two trains a week.

    1. I am deeply indebted Sir.

However, for me what matters is that those documents are found in virtual form in my own mind.

    1. One train per day in each direction is not just hopeless, it’s also pointless and damned close to useless. We only used it to make a point.

      1. Polesworth has one train per day in one direction – depart 6.48am, Stafford arrive 7.17am – which is even more hopeless,

      2. The only reason I did was because I had finished surveying a nearby pub for the regional pub of the year competition.
