GUNNERSIDE GETS ITS PUB BACK

August 2023. Gunnerside.

One of Mum and Dad’s favoured TV programmes is “Our Yorkshire Farm”, a series where two folk just south of the Tan Hill Inn attempt to repopulate the Yorkshire Dales to provide custom for their local pub.

Mum was amazed to hear we’d driven past the Owen family farm days earlier and not stopped to ask for autographs/adopt a sheep.

But we were headed for Gunnerside, where three years ago I was approached by two locals to ask if I’d run the King’s Head, as the local community were recruiting as they sought to re-open it that year.

Well, obviously I didn’t want to, but I was glad to see it straight back in the GBG this year.

Pretty village,

solid stone pub,

nice looking house right next door (NO ! says Mrs RM).

Just a reminder, folks. Taking photos of people in pubs is WRONG.

So here’s some hand pumps. Probably a couple too many, but folk expect to see local beers on the bar and Black Sheep are (checks map) at least 20 miles away.

The Black Sheep was a 3.5 though, the landlord was a gem, responding to a visitors request for a menu with “We’ve three sandwiches; ham, cheese, tuna“.

Three is plenty, often two more than enough.

  1. Very pleased to see it’s open. The previous landlord, wielding a brush outside, told us to go in at 11.30am. “Tell the lad I’ve sent you in for a pint.”
PS The Owens have stopped production as they’ve split up.
