August 2023. Tunbridge Wells.
Mrs RM and I had had a hard day at Pembury hospital, and needed some exercise and 10% Imperial stout to clear the mind.
Fuggles had obliged with the beer, and now it was time to head back up the A26,

stopping to admire this garden,

and this pun.

But we mustn’t stop at another pub oh no.
Oh dear.

I thought I deserved a half in the George, the one next to the posh seafood place, as I’d been DES when ticking the place six years ago with the in-laws, and only really got to comment on the posh sofas and pubby feel.

Six years on the George remains that relative rarity, an upmarket drinkers pub attracting older couples in the heart of town. The lovely barman wipes the bottom of the glasses and stands them on a fresh beermat, a nice touch.
Good to see it ticking over nicely on a Tuesday night, but then pubs generally seem to be doing good trade this year.

They’ve added a brewery since my ticking visit, and the Fonthill beer was cool and tasty, but the Gun Zamzama was the star (3.5).

Polite music, decent prices, some cosy seating, the sort of pub that top reader Pauline might design for a small pub co.
Don’t know what Pauline would make of the terrifying stairs, mind.
Pleased to learn that you and Mrs RM enjoyed the George, Martin, although those stairs are quite scary, especially when descending!
As an aside, we visited a café in Howarth, on our recent visit to Yorkshire, and the stairs down to the toilets there, were equally scary.

And folk complain about the toilets in Spoons !

T’other Paul,
Three months ago the stairs in the Fleece were upwards to the lavatory and not at all scary.
I’ve never trusted cafes.

It’s amazing to see my old local after so long. Many moons ago when I was young student nurse in the Kent and Sussex I took up virtulal residence in the George both working and indulging in many a pint.
I intend to visit Tunbridge Well shorty and surely the high light will be having a couple of beers in the George.

I’m sure it will be a highlight, it’s a lovely welcoming pub though I suspect it’s a bit different now !
My wife was born in Pembury (lived in Paddock Wood) but I see services finally closed in the Old Kent and Sussex in T’Wells more recently.
I can recommend the Fuggles bar a couple of minutes east at the top of town for toasties and beers.

You can do better.
