SHAKELINES

July 2023. Sheffield.

More of that modern music you folk love as we plough on through Kelham Island on Friday night in search of the next Arctic Monkeys Airport Dad.

Always interesting to see the gentrification of Kelham, where we noted a rather more upmarket crowd in the wine bars and Sardinian restaurants than you get in the trad pubs.

A huge premium to live in Kelham these days, but the new housing is attractive (says Mrs RM),

and you get to live 30 seconds, rather than our 10 minutes, from the Fat Cat, I guess.

The Cat had live music, but no spare seating, and the act was what you’d call “CAMRA beer festival” so we moved on.

Is the Shakespeare the one you always come home p****d from ?” asks Mrs RM.

Well, only once, and that was the fault of the Kees, not me.

I didn’t tell Mrs RM I’ve started ticking Shakespeare’s, I’m not sure she’s up to a day in Stratford.

She looked for the best seating,

while I tried to remember not to buy her a sour beer from Waterbeach.

Mrs RM was rather taken by the Shakespeare’s garden, less so by the hip-hop in the room upstairs. “The frequencies don’t agree with me” she explained mysteriously.

Despite the plastic glasses at festival fringe, the beers were superb too. I left Mrs RM to finish mine and walked up the fire exit to explore Slinga & Bandito.

This is Slinga & Bandito…

You had to be there, I guess.

Anyway, what a great view from the top.

Still a classic, in a city of classics.

    1. I’m with Mrs RM on the “frequencies,” which means Slinga & Bandito get a definite thumbs down from me. Apart from the view, not worth climbing the stairs for, says Mr Grumpy of Tonbridge!

    2. “Frequencies” = “Things that are frequent”.

I suppose that those are heavily circumstantial, but under those described, I’m inclined to agree, Christine.

      1. Five! The other two I know about are on Lower Redland Road and somewhere in Totterdown. Wonder where the fifth one is…
