A TASTE OF SOUTHWOLD

June 2023. Cambridge & Isleham.

I see that Simon has finally discovered the delights of Southwold.

Chris the Crab and Ozan Octopus ? That’s not the Southwold I remember.

And to be honest, though I need to venture out in that direction to complete Suffolk at the Racehorse in Westhall, I rarely come across Adnams in pubs these days either.

So it was refreshing to see the famous Bitter on the bar at Dad’s latest octogenarian day out.

Mrs RM’s top pick in Cambridge, the Wrestlers on Newmarket Road, is as good at Thai as Chung Hwa is as Crispy Beef. It used to be a stop for United fans on the way to the Abbey, before kicking out the pool table and jukebox 20 years ago and going all pastel.

It’s a Charlie Wells house that’s flirted with more exciting beers (Bombardier) over the years, before ending up a beer range you’ll know and love;

Looks good, doesn’t it ?

Pretty much perfect, in fact. Cool and with a scummy head. NBSS 3.5, stick it back in the GBG, they deserve it.

The food is as great as it was 35 years ago when I had my first Pad Thai here, and a mix of that with Green Beef Curry and Beef Salad was devoured by Dad.

Packed by 12.30 as always, generally with the Science Park crowd.

A few days later, we popped back to the Merry Monk in Isleham, scene of Dad’s first Eggs Royale.

The Monk has the rather less rare Ghost Ship on keg, or at least I think it was keg, though it wasn’t as fizzy as expected.

But where do I go for Broadside ?

  1. I really like Southwold Bitter. The more I have had it, the more I’ve liked it. Classic beer to me. Not a style of beer we see often over here.

      1. I at times love Broadside. And I’m not sure why it tastes different to me from time to time. Ghost Ship for me is like all the rest of the hopped up beers. I can drink one at a sitting, but a second one is always unappealing…

      2. Extra was a Champion Beer of Britain and I remember a wonderful pint of it in Leamington’s Red House.
        I like the Broadside and particularly the Southwold Bitter. Not the Ghost Shi* or Mosaic though.

  2. Come on, I’ve just found perfection for you Budobust Birmingham is next door to the Welly. Never realised that the back door from the Welly was basically the back door of the Joint Stock though.
