MORE PRE-EMPTIVE BEXHILL-ON-SEA

June 2023. Bexhill.

I can’t pretend Bexhill provided many surprises.

Solid but unspectacular old-fashioned shopping streets straight out of Felixstowe, and a Chinese takeaway that’s clearly modelled on the Chung Hwa I’ve just got back from.

The street art is one surprise,

the extravagance of the row of houses between Marina Court Avenue and the Promenade, with gardens running down to the beach, is another.

It’s not that posh, mind.

And the Traffers, the local CAMRA LocAle Pub of the Year, is pleasingly back street and traditional.

Quite why I’m so determined to track down potential pre-emptive ticks in GBG24 when I’m so far off completing GBG23, is odd.

I ignored the Locale, and went for the Harvey’s.

Hang on, that’s a Locale too, surely ? The pub proudly displayed its CAMRA certificate, but the branch magazines were hidden behind the bar and there was no way I was actually asking for one.

It’s a nice homely pub, but though I lingered for half an hour it was a bit too quiet, with no music and the only chat the takeaway order to McDonalds.

Look closely below and see the two table along the front of the bar to stop barflies.

Hotter inside the pub than outside too, though the Sussex Best was cool enough, though slipping a bit from my original assessment of “Mmmm, another 3.5“.

Worth a visit, but go in the evening.

I think the Traffers and the Spoons are 50/50 bets for the GBG, the micro hidden in the town clock a tougher call.

If I come back to Bexhill it’ll be for that Chinese takeaway, Eddie Izzard’s model railway (true) and the music programme at De La Warr, which should not be confused with the early ’90s US hip-hop outfit.

I was back from Bexhill before Mrs RM missed me.

      1. I knew there had to be a downside to using the same name on all my online activity.

Fifteensquared is the website for cruciverbalists, which had an identity crisis last week that caused it to resist attempts to log in. Now fixed.
