YOUR FULL SCOTTISH BREAKFAST GUIDE REACHES THE GATEHOUSE OF FLEET

Have you got up to date with your *******(*) blog yet ?” says Mrs RM, whose swearing is almost at 2022 Taylor Swift levels.

Well, not quite, but as I approach the last couple of reports from Dumfries & Galloway I can at least see an end to the backlog.

Joan and Dave have been taunting us with their culinary reports from Germany,

but us Brits also have food (for now), and I’m delighted to say that Gather on the edge of Gatehouse of Fleet provided a stunning breakfast experience.

Where ? Let Wiki clarify; “Gatehouse of Fleet is a town half in the civil parish of Girthon and half in the parish of Anwoth divided by the river FleetKirkcudbrightshire, within the district council region of Dumfries and Galloway“. Bing dumps it in Castle Douglas. So that’s clear.

Gather is a purpose built diner for a posh “venue” up the hill overlooking the Water of Fleet.

They wanted me to book, but who books for breakfast ?

Well, everyone, it seemed, as I had to barge a group of folk in Helly Hansen-wear out of the way to get the best seat.

Blimey, it was expertly cooked, even if the full breakfast at Cairn Lodge Services might still have the edge.

Full calorie allowance for the weekend consumed, I attempted to walk them off in Gatehouse, which I guess is the mini-Cowbridge of the North.

Of all the GBG “counties”, Dumfries and Galloway has impressed me most, and I can understand Barry the Waterbeach car mechanic loved coming here.

A wholesome autumnal smell hovered over the mill, the floral displays sparkled,

the quirky art surprised.

No GBG entries, but the pubs looked inviting and there was definite micropub conversion potential.

A charming place,

that offered a message of hope.

And we all need hope.

(*) ******* = superlative
