STEAK OR SAUSAGE FOR TEA ? IT’S A BIG DECISION IN A TOWN CALLED OTTERY ST. MARY

The blog returns to that endless month of July 2022 (101 GBG ticks); will it ever end ?

A signature tick next, the London in Ottery St. Mary having thwarted me at least once with it’s whacky opening hours (per What Pub);

The Monday session is particularly tricky.

Ottery St Mary (pop. 4,898) is your quintessential faded east Devon town (see also : Cullompton),

a slightly jarring mix of beautiful main square,

Proper Shops“,

and run-down shops. The memorial to Dom has divided art critics.

The town’s name comes from the term “Otter-y“, used by Beer Twitter to describe Boring Brown Bitter of which the one up the road at Luppit is a prime example.

The other Fascinating Fact about the town concerns Pixie Day is “an old tradition which takes place annually in June. The day commemorates a legend of pixies being banished from the town to local caves known as the ‘Pixie’s Parlour’ (now a micropub) “.

The London Inn is proudly NOT a micropub.

Look ! They sell Carlsberg, expressly forbidden under the Herne Rules.

Mind you, the half dozen customers are squeezed into a single simply furnished room with a pleasant breeze from the garden and all chat to each other, which is how it should be. I enter at the end of a line about other people’s children being tenable dwarves, or at least that’s what I wrote down.

At the bar, a chap ushers me ahead of him to order “Independence” by Bristol Beer Factory, a perfectly cool, crisp pint (3.5).

You go ahead, I’m just here for a chat“.

It’s 3.15, and another couple with a quiet dog discuss their tea options.

Shall we have steak or sausage ?”

OK

“Or both ?”

OK

It’s like an afternoon at my Mum’s, where the next meal dominates conversation.

In truth, life revolves around a series of minor decisions. What to have for tea, whether to go DIPA or Imperial Stout at IndyMan, whether to put the gardening off till tomorrow or forever.

We are so privileged to be able to go in pubs and have these minor decisions debated in front of us.
