Sunday saw an epic fail in my attempt to tick the Salutation in Manchester studentville, but 3 days later I got another chance to make some inroads into Manchester GBG-land.
After an 11am haircut from Matt, and an admiring glance at the never-ending developments in the southern heart of the city,
I stood patiently outside at noon, coins in hand. This time the curtains were drawn; my hopes rose.
I’m intrigued by the notion that a student pub would be closed weekends, after all Oxford Road was heaving but it seems quite common (see also : Aston). Never mind, at 12:00 the young man opening the door had to contend with my dash for the door.
10% discounts for students ! That’s nearly as good as CAMRA membership !
Anyway, the Salutation is a lovely pub, with proper seating and an unfussy air.
I only stopped for a crisp half of Bollington (3.5) and a chat with the chap.
“Welcome back !” I said, over-enthusiastically. But I meant it.
I mentioned the contradictory opening hours and suggested their Facebook page is updated. It seemed to be the case that as the pub was run by the Students Union that would have to go through “due process”.
But you know from me not to turn up on weekends, and now it’s been updated you know that from What Pub, too. You’ll keep your views on pubs being closed weekends to yourself, I guess.
