Before you were distracted by a hunt for Pride in Ontario, I was on the edge of Sheffield seeking out positivity at Zion Church in Oughtibridge.
Having confirmed, annoyingly, that Will was correct and that there indeed is a Sam Smiths pub here, I had an hour to excercise before my daily trip to the tip with Mrs RM’s never-ending cardboard boxes.
Enough time to make it to the exotic sounding Wharncliffe Side, which is to Oughtibridge what Heptonstall is to Hebden.
One more chance to explore the abandoned Stones pub,
and this attempt at luxury camping with forest views.
Very steep up the delightfully named Cockshutt Lane, where I feel very much one with the North.

It’s a pleasing little village, with some frantic housing development near the sewage works mill.

Local Bradfield Brewery’s Wharncliffe Arms had all of 3 months free of Punch ownership before Covid struck.
Let us be joyful, jolly, and motivated to return to pubs like the Wharncliffe Arms.

How often do you get to go to the tip? (Sorry, Household Waste Disposal Centre). We are limited to four visits per month, AND you have to book a slot online in advance.

We’ve a small recycling centre 5 minutes walk away, mainly for cardboard, that I use almost daily and a main waste site disposal centre for polystyrene, wood etc that I use once a week. No restrictions here (we had to book slots a week in advance in Cambridge).

I don’t know anything about dragons in Wharncliffe; in fact I don’t even know how to say Wharncliffe. My daughter corrected my pronunciation the other day – I know, very badly brought up. It’s the local waagh-sound, as in Ward’s Brewery, or perhaps more helpfully as in CARD rather than DAWN.

And yes, I know that your blog is written rather than spoken, but you never know when this may come in handy. (A similar sound probably used to appear in Walkley (waagh-kley?) but there are so many southerners living there now that locals don’t even bother shrugging their shoulders any more.)
