Not a post as such, more a serious question ?
When DOES lockdown end, exactly, and when can I go to the pub (any pub) again ?
I know Tier 3 means pubs are closed and Tier 2 means pie and pint deals only, which only leaves me with a beer in Tier 1 (probably that means Cornwall and the Isle of Wight, wherever that is).

But let’s assume there’s SOME pubs in Tier 1; are they going to be open on the 2nd itself, or will I have to stand outside the door ’till Thursday the 3rd ?
The official UK Government website describes the local restriction tier system that will be in place from Wednesday 2 December. That sounds promising.
But YOU try and find the definitive guidance. Twitter is full of bemused businesses tonight.
What on earth is 12:01 am, anyway ? That sounds like a minute past midnight to me i.e. 00:01.
A very helpful response (I jest) from an untypically informal Gov.UK here.

So, should I be waiting outside a Tier 1 Spoons at 9am on the 2nd ?
It’s not just pubs. My lad is desperate to start cutting hair again in Manchester, and my hair now looks more like Ian Gillan than it has since 1981. I might be first in the line.

This year, next year, sometime or never ?

Someone on the radio just predicted there would be nowhere in Tier 1 announced on Thursday.

But are you allowed to travel to tier 1? Scottish tier 3 & 4 aren’t allowed to move outside their home region. Told you, move to Pontypridd.

If I’m not in Tier 1 to start with no-one else will be.

The way things are going in parts of Kent, we could be in Tier 3!

The only tier 1 regions will be the counties you’ve already completed.

Yeah, probably Rutland and Eritrea.

I’m in Scottish tier one, which means the pubs are open pretty much as normal and I can travel to anywhere else in tiers one & two. In Scotland of course. Nippy will have me shot if I dare go to That England.

I hate to tell you this but, it will end in… tiers. 😉
(and that most definitely suxxors!)
“What on earth is 12:01 am, anyway ? That sounds like a minute past midnight to me i.e. 00:01.”
Sigh, yep. That’s a standard, and not just for lockdowns. Things usually end (or begin) at 12:01am of the local time.
“So, should I be waiting outside a Tier 1 Spoons at 9am on the 2nd ?”
If I lived there, and won the lottery, I’d take that to court! Saying it ‘ends’ on December 2nd means that you’re good to go as of 12:01am… on December 2nd! Crickey! We have Black Friday sales over here that start at 12:01am. Even big movie premieres that started at 12:01am!
Bloody sodding government!
“It’s not just pubs. My lad is desperate to start cutting hair again in Manchester, and my hair now looks more like Ian Gillan than it has since 1981.”
Him and all the other small businesses that are being ground into the dust. (sigh)
Christmas, alas, is going to be the death knell for many a small business. My wife is becoming beside herself as this is normally her prime money time due to catering and the like. Luckily, for us anyway, we’re old, with secondary income from small military pensions (and not a lot at that!). Other businesses, like your son’s, could really take it on the chin.
It just frosts me to know you have customers willing to buy, and businesses willing to sell, and the government can put the kibosh on it!
(ok, that doesn’t include drug deals just to be clear) 🙂
I’ve seen online that the UK government is ‘considering’ allowing things to open up for 5 days around Christmas. Make that of it what you will. In fact, make the most of it, because it may be sometime before it happens again. 😦
Cheers

So, 12.01am is 00.01 on the 24 hour clock?
LikeLike
Yep. It’s that “am” suffix that the 24 hour clock ignores, but which means such a lot. The 24 hour clock, which never displays the number 24 in the hours column. AM: ante meridiem, or before noon. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/ante%20meridiem
I think some users confuse things by writing 12am when they mean 12 noon. It can’t before noon if it is noon. Just as it can’t be 12pm if it’s midnight, since midnight is equally spaced between two noons, so is neither before nor after noon.
If you weren’t confused before, you really should be by now.

Sheffield Hatter,
This is like the good old CAMRA Forum when we could spend week after week discussing 24 hour clocks which, if I remember correctly, most agreed are an abomination.
I think I suggested that 12 noon and 12 midnight are proper times but 12am and 12pm are ambiguous.

And you were right, Paul.
But 12 midnight on the 2nd could mean 2 days.
As it is, the barbers will be open on the 2nd and I doubt anyone will stop them.
Whether any pubs open on the 2nd, or 3rd, or at all, is a different question.

The Statutory Instruments for the post-lockdown tiers haven’t yet been made, so the newest legislation is for the lockdown which just says “These Regulations expire at the end of the period of 28 days beginning with the day on which they come into force”, which as they came into force on the 5th November means that they expire at the end of 2nd December (if I’ve counted on my calendar correctly) unless the new statutory instruments (when made) change that.

Watch here for the tier statutory instruments being updated (the ones that are there have been revoked by the lockdown one).

Thanks, Ed.
Well that’s certainly what we all thought. My last pint was in the evening of Wednesday 4th November so logically the 28 days takes us to the end of Wednesday 2nd December.
It’s just a lot of publications refer to the end of Lockdown FROM 2 December (i.e. just after midnight that morning). The Prime Minister himself refers to a return to Tiers from the 2nd.

As you say I was reading today that they’re talking about the tiers coming back in from the 2nd, so perhaps they will word the new statutory instruments to commence from that date superceding whatever the lockdown one says.

Excellent, though possibly not for pubs.
I saw hairdressers offering appointments on the 2nd today; I hope that the ones expecting to open on the 3rd aren’t too upset when they find out.

Martin,
Ah yes, I see what you mean.
But 00.00 hrs on the 2nd could mean 2 days.
Never mind the pubs and beer, This could keep us occupied till the new year !

Incidentally, after all that build-up I only managed 9 pubs in Tier 2 Cambs that first week in December before moving into Tier 3. NINE !

Martin,
That’s about nine more Cambridgeshire pubs than I’ve used since the 1990s.
