There’s two main options if you’re staying over in Seaham tonight.
Seaham Hall is no doubt the choice of my discerning readers like Pauline and Stafford Paul.

Nice views;

Or you could save £525 and park up for free at Nose’s Point,

and have views like these from your window;

A 20 minute walk into town (Guardian readers : taxi) reveals the Peterhead of the, er, south.

My new tick is a coal-themed micro on Church Street, the main drag. I typed “Coal” into Google Maps and followed the arrows.
I’d EVEN phoned ahead to make sure it’s be open at 8pm.
Oh.

Very shut. No opening times. No GBG sticker.
No GBG sticker ! I check WhatPub, and immediately realise my schoolboy error.
The Coalface ISN’T the Coalhouse, Church Street’s second new micro yards away.

Surely the Coalhouse should sue the Coalface for cultural appropriation or summat*.
They won’t. They’re lovely people. And anyone who sells Sam Smiths Organic Lager (and Stout), possibly cheaper than Sam, deserves your support.

Spotless and spacious and sporting a lovely mural of the mines, trade had been steady enough to keep GNEB and North Riding beers at a good standard, but I sense the Old Boys still cautious about a speedy return round here.

Mark will be delighted to learn what was playing as I entered, at volumes just low enough to deter the evil singing;
No criticism can be made of a pub playing China Crisis.
Or T’Pau’s “China In Your Hands“, come to that.
*I am joking
You do have to wonder how often that room gets rented. Those are London prices.

Only “arguably” the best room in the house. Did you check the others?

Reading all the other comments on the coastline and area I have to say “ssshhhhh, keep the secret”.

Not too far from Durham, but I’ve never been there. Never been on that coast, never seen that sea.

I feel ashamed saying this to you, Martin, but China Crisis didn’t make so much of an impact here in Michigan. Clearly there is no justice in which English bands got radio airplay here in the early 80s, as that Men Without Hats song was absolutely everywhere. 😉

You noted that disgrace last time I mentioned China Crisis, whose 80s legacy is cruelly underrated.
I wonder if “Black Man Ray” will one day get the credit it deserves.

I’d expect a house for £525 in those parts. With a mine thrown in.
