Well, what a disappointment.
I’d been looking forward to bringing you photographic proof of the merits of the Hope & Anchor, but all I have is this;

It’s Dave and Joan’s fault, of course. No sooner was I through the door than they’d thrusted a pint of Brains SA into my fist and were bombarding me with questions about NBSS half points, the history of lacings, and what it’s like to survive a meeting with BRAPA.
It’s a pub for chat and boozing, despite its location on the most touristy street.
Dave had secured the best seat in the house.”It’s all going on !” he said, mysteriously.
It may have been, but all I’ve noted was the NBSS scores, SA and a Black IPA both 3.5+.
My Top 100 nomination has nothing to do with the excellent reading material.

I left Dave and Joan to their curry and chips while I ticked the Buccaneer, which may seem rude but you should be aware they’d left Dick and Barb stranded at Chicago Airport, which says all you need to know about their priorities.

The Buccaneer is Tenby’s equivalent of the Duke William in Stourbridge, a homebrew pub for the young set. Need I say more ?

Anyway, I went back to the Hope for the Black IPA, and I doubt I had a better hour in a pub in Wales that trip. It’s all about the people, isn’t it ?
People ike the guard who shouted “We nearly went without you !” as I jumped on the 20:05 back to Pembroke Dock five minutes before it left.
Does the top 100 list exceed 500 pubs yet ?

Oh yes. Probably.

Need a rethink on the ‘too many beers’ script mate. I counted six or seven on the photo, yet it’s on your top 100?

They really turned the beers pretty quickly from what I saw. Some of the best quality beer of our trip. It actually did not feel like too many taps. Anchor and Tenby House both seemed to turn a lot of cask over. I thought they were the two best cask ale in town. We tried repeatedly. The Anchor is a really great coastal pub.

I’m sure it is Dave. The moral of the story is you can have as many taps as you can turnover. If you turn over ten beers fine, if you can only mange one that’s fine too. Too many commentators shouting ‘too many taps’ all the time. Reality is it depends on your turnover.

Too many taps.

Agreed. The quality was quite good in my opinion. It helped to have some regulars really hitting the cask hard.

But in practice there *are* very often too many taps, especially at slack times of the week. Remember the stat that 90% of all cask is kept on beyond three days?

I counted seven or eight but then realised “Caldey Island Sea BASS” is probably not a beer.

They knew the Southworths were coming so put extra beers on.

And some pubs shouldn’t even try to do cask ales

All beer should be cask RC, all beer.

As a former news man I’m salivating at the mystery of a naked Tenby man found in a car but is it the same naked Tenby man who was found with a goat ?
I could get an extra weekend supplement out of this …

The bigger question is how closely are they related to BRAPA (naked man or goat).

Same incident – naked Tenby man in car with goat.

It gets weirder. Zooming in to the text, it seems he was in a car wash, not in a car.

“bombarding me with questions about NBSS half points, the history of lacings, and what it’s like to survive a meeting with BRAPA” –Glad I’m not the only one who bombards you with questions. 😉
Did you get into pre-historical lacings, or confine yourself to a discussion of medieval and renaissance lacings?

“Dave is particularly interested in the Dark Ages of lacings.”
So am I!
But, I think we’re talking about different lacings. 😉

The colourful Coors Light pump is all one really needs to show a pub in all its photographic glory.
“and what it’s like to survive a meeting with BRAPA.”
Couldn’t they just read your blog? 😉
“It’s a pub for chat and boozing, despite its location on the most touristy street.”
High praise.
“Leaves you wanting more”
I’m getting the feeling that the Tenby Observer only has so many 48pt typeset words for their headlines (i.e. Tenby, Man, Found, Naked… and then a number of nouns and prepositions). 🙂
“but you should be aware they’d left Dick and Barb stranded at Chicago Airport, which says all you need to know about their priorities.”
I like the cut of their jib. 🙂
“Need I say more ?”
Blimey. That picture’s worth a thousand words.
“It’s all about the people, isn’t it ?”
Pretty much, but good beer does help.
“People ike the guard who shouted”
Is ike a Welsh word?
Cheers
