LIFE’S A GAS (LAMP)

I’m writing this listening to Pellegrini’s West Ham beating Everton, so here’s some proper Hammers art I saw walking up Princess Street.

The Londoners you’re allowed to like

On from the Grey Horse to the Gas Lamp, the sort of Beer Guide contrast you still get in central Manchester. A bit like going from the Templar to North Bar in that little town on the wrong side of the Pennines.

In fact the only things the Gas Lamp and Grey Horse have in common are that they’re new to the Beer Guide and offer 10% CAMRA Discount.  And serve NBSS 3.5 beer, which is more than Good enough.  I do hope that setting up your own brewery isn’t really necessary to get a pub in the Guide.

Nothing to do with Tom Sawyer

A Manc pub I haven’t done before.  But then I haven’t been in the Sawyer’s either; what have I missed ?

Don’t attempt the descent for your sixth pint, Si

The Gas Lamp was relatively quiet on Saturday, possibly because I’m not the only one who’s never noticed it.  There’s one couple near the bar, and a group or two in the atmospheric back room who look sheepish when I peep my head round the door.

Quirky

I like the spartan décor and decoration. There’s a touch of Indyman Victorian Baths about it.

Workhouse chic

Loads of beers, but pleasingly just the three pumps, one of which (Squawk) I didn’t notice till too late.  Mrs RM would have loved all those strong beers.

Lovely pint, a bit lonely

Cheery barmaid, eclectic soundtrack (OK, it was jazz), and a cool pale pint from Beatnikz Republic that was unbeatable (NBSS 3.5+).  How does Manchester keep beer so cool ?

A great drinking den, up there with Cask or Font down the road.

So my great start to GBG 19 continued, when will it end ?  (Ten points).

  1. “Don’t attempt the descent for your sixth pint, Si”

    At least there’s a handrail.

    “Workhouse chic”

    “Works” for me. 🙂

“How does Manchester keep beer so cool ?”

Well, in this instance, because it’s in the cellar? 🙂

    “when will it end ?”

    I think that’s five so far so… (un)lucky 13?

    Cheers

      1. “I suggest you follow something more intellectually stimulating.”

Not to worry. When I need a change of pace (i.e. intellectually stimulating) I go watch some Monty Python Gumby YouTube vids. 🙂

  2. I think I was one of the couple in the back room looking sheepish! We thought that some bloke had wandered in looking for the Gents and in his embarrassment had started randomly snapping photos. Anyway agree the Beatnikz Republic pale ale was excellent.

  3. Glad to see it’s still going strong.. they used to sell one of my favourites, a bohemia regent dark lager that tasted like bonfire toffee. The oast house round the corner used to be decent as well back in the day
