15 minutes walk from station to micro.

15 seconds from micro to Proper Pub. And that’s only because I stopped to take a photo of the hardware shop.

The Cinque Port Arms is a solid looking house, though the use of the “C” world is always a bit worrying.

And inside it’s a little bit open plan sports bar (you could be in Whittlesey). Not many takers for Hampshire v Somerset on the bid screen.

But luckily it’s a Proper beer range. What should I choose ? I look for advice in the glasses of the drinkers, but get none.

My heart says IPA, my brain says Betty Stogs, my mouth says “Romney please“. The landlady (I guess) turns them round to find which one that is. If you need to turn the clips round you’ve too many beers on.
“Thank you, Sweetie” My first “Sweetie” of the year.
It’s surprisingly good, in fairness, for a beer I’ve never heard of (NBSS 3). I take it for a tour of the pub, which it appreciates.

Very pubby in a South East London way, even with a “new menu” being intently discussed at the bar (Burger £11.50).
Quite a bit of cask sold to the Professionals after that, mostly Abbot, which seemed to be priced a lot cheaper (£3.30 I think) than my decent homebrew from up the road.
Outside, a giant flume of wet fluff caught me in the face. I tracked the culprit down to the gift shop.

Armed with a giant scotch egg (£1.65) I headed to the beach, past the stumpy church.

If Romney High Street is a bit traffic-clogged, the walk down to Greatstone-on-Sea through the sheep is rather magical.
You’ll find a pub with cutting-edge play area down there (DoomBar), but I recommend eating your scotch egg, perched for your enjoyment on a coffee cup to show scale, on the pebbles.

I had the beach to myself, on a beautiful summers day. What could possibly be better ?

Answer – Margate
The giant scotch egg. A very large hens egg, a different species of egg or a regular egg with an astonishing amount of sausage meat?

Looks lovely. Wish I could jump in the teleporter and be beamed to the marshlands this afternoon. There’s a great Cinque Port Arms in Hastings too, by the way.

It’s one of those pubs where the landlady calls you ‘Luv’ the first night you’re there. Next evening she glances at you when you walk in and asks ‘The usual..?’ A drinker’s pub.

Must have taken you hours to get the proper framing and lighting for that first picture. Lovely.
Good thing, though, that Scotch egg stayed on the cup or you may have never found it again…

You’re right, it took nearly 20 seconds to balance the scotch egg properly. Glad SOMEONE appreciate my efforts, just because I’m not as good as Caldwell etc etc

There was me thinking you were trying to recreate the ‘classic’ Doom Bar advert!
We didn’t alight at New Romney when we travelled on the RHDR (not a toy but a proper railway – it has a school service!) but had a great time in the wind at Dungeness – the horizontal swinging pub sign was a particular highlight.

I hoped to offend a train obsessive, and I succeeded. To be fair, it didn’t have a Thomas face.

I wouldn’t call myself an obsessive but did have a misspent youth ‘playing’ with 7 1/4″ gauge steam locomotives! Then I found beer…

Anyone who calls a train station a railway station is an obsessive (cue eruptions in Stockport).

The RHDR “has a school service” but I thought a Proper Railway was one that had weekday trains throughout the winter.

“And that’s only because I stopped to take a photo of the hardware shop.”
Hardware? It’s all bloody plastic (and possibly chocolate). 🙂
“Craft Pils”
That’s what caught my eye as well.
“300 balls, 200 too many”
I was going to say 298 too many. Two suffices for me thank you very much. 😉
“I look for advice in the glasses of the drinkers, but get none.”
Which would only work thanks to the jam jars (ducks!). 🙂
“Faux rural”
Indeed. Not too many fire exit signs back in the day. 😉
“Pumping out Dua Lipa”
Is that a type for ‘dual IPA’?
“Armed with a giant scotch egg (£1.65) I headed to the beach,”
And in that first photo I thought that was a well fried donut.
“Answer – Margate”
I think that’s your go-to answer for anything in Kent. 🙂
Cheers

Wow. So much here, Russ. Dua Lipa is named after a type of beer, donut/scotch egg confusion and a debate about the meaning of “hardware” (I dunno what the word is).

No. I have very few 78s and none from any hipster I’ve never heard of.
