ANOTHER TWIRL, ANOTHER THANET (MICRO PUB)

Where am I up to ?  Oh yes, micro pubs in Kent.  Mrs RM is there already, clearing out my in-laws loft.  If she finds any Fremlin mirrors up there I’ll let you know.

You know retiredmartin, I really miss your reports on micros

Oddly, I don’t recall Dick and Dave saying that last week.  No, it was “How’s Kent going then Ha Ha Ha?“, a reference to my latest opening time trauma.

Here’s a “pub” that was open.

NauticAles

Listed under Ramsgate this year, probably Northwood next, such is the geographical fluidity of the GBG listing. It’s very much a suburb serving the whole of Thanet, anyway.

Nautic Ales has authenticity on its side; look at what’s across the road;

Great range

You’ll be pleased to hear the hours listed in the Beer Guide are already wrong, midday opening switched to 1pm.  Yes, it’s a free world, but WHY ?

Luckily I was there at 1.15pm, and entered without further drama.

You know what micro pubs look like by now.

Nauctic ! Pirate ! Get it ?

But this had a few “real pub” touches, like the Guinness (do Herne rules even allow that ?) and a marvellous display of pretzels.

America’s finest

In fact, the dominating features were displays of eggs and pickles, giving it a real South-east London feel. Not unreasonably for what is essentially a distant suburb of Bexley.

Gastro

The landlord was a Guvnor too, chatting about a Royal Wedding I seem to have missed completely, and serving an excellent cool Pig & Porter Citra (NBSS 3.5) he initially denied having, possibly to save it for more deserving regulars (joke. I hope).

The seating in the small front room is what you’ve come to know and love/loathe, and I was in and out in ten minutes, with no other customers to make scribbled notes about.  No doubt the Thanet Micro Bus would be coming round the corner soon.

  1. Always appreciate a good Bexley reference! Speaking of which, the Bird and Barrel that has opened in Barnehurst is well worth visiting for a pre-emptive tick – a micropub that gets a lot of the “pub” stuff right.

      1. It’s for pubs that don’t have enough turnover for draught Guinness. You pour a chilled special 440ml widget-less can of Guinness into an equally special glass, stand it on the metal plate, press the button and hey presto, the ultrasound excites the nitrogen out of the beer and forms a proper Guinness head.

  2. “Here’s a “pub” that was open.”

    I have relatives* in Kent so I won’t be making fun of the map. 😉

    “look at what’s across the road”

    They probably chose the location on purpose then.

    “Colourful”

    That’s probably the nicest thing one can say about it.

    “Nauctic ! Pirate ! Get it ?”

    If ‘Nauctic’ is a peninsula in Somalia then, yes. 🙂

    Cheers

    * – that I like. 🙂

  3. We Americans don’t have much to be proud of these days, so I will grab this opportunity to feel intensely patriotic about the presence of Snyder’s Honey Mustard and Onion pretzels being available in select British pubs. George Washington himself would wipe a tear away and say, “You done good, boys. You done good.” 😉
