I never forget how lucky I am to be able to go round the country, finding pubs closed, motorways jammed and Starbucks running out of Pike Place (or worse, replaced with Christmas Blend).
Richard Coldwell was quizzing Simon and I last week about the downside of GBG ticking; how’d we feel about having to visit micro pubs, industrial estates, social clubs and Ember Inns as well as “proper” pubs.
Simply, we love the variety of the Good Beer Guide, whether or not that’s a variety engineered by local CAMRA Good Beer Guide.
And so it was, at 8pm the night before Halloween*, Charles and I found ourselves walking in the dark towards a Stourbridge industrial estate, home to Badelynge (the latin for Bad Lye Nearby, I think). The Green Duck tap, apparently.
We could should have been in a nice warm Bathams pub just outside the town centre, but the Beer Guide giveth, and the Beer Guide taketh.
And to be fair, Gainsborough trading estate would have looked OK if the vaping shop had been open. Another humorous pun for Charles’s expanding list.
Our mental image was of a brewery tap packed with middle-aged CAMRA folk**, taking full advantage of the “4 pints for £10” deal.
Instead we found an infant school disco. Yes, a children’s “Halloween party” in full swing.
So, no stilted conversations with locals about beer then. Thank goodness. Just noise. And green lights, and severely restricted photographic opportunity. I think it’s fair to say it’s lucky this is the night I was here, rather than BRAPA.
But I like to see children in pubs, of any sort. They were having a great time, the brewery tap was selling its beer, and life was breathed into a residential suburb. On Fridays and Saturdays at least.
We perched on the end of a long trestle table and compared a couple of halves of home-brew. One stout was two sweet, one IPA was superb, both were £2.80 a pint.
Top stuff, and clearly a no-nonsense approach to people who don’t wash their hands in the Gents.
Curry, as before, at cheap and cheery Tropical Spice, picturesquely situated above Poundbazaar.
A top night in the ‘Bridge, even without a Bathams pub.
No pictures of our curry, but here’s one of Dylan from the entrance to the Old Crispin.
*Yes, I’m that far behind on the blog, even doing two posts a day.
**No offence, Stourbridge & Halesowen CAMRA, that’s me as well.
Do these places not sell pork scratchings?! It’s all very well having a cracking atmosphere full pub excellent beer at great prices but what about the scratchings our kid 😉😉😀

The photo of the mirror and the hand wash sign, both with bloody handprints on them, look like something out of the Zombie apocalypse. Was that part of the Halloween theme?
The underpass photo for some reason reminds of the film Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel.
Cheers
PS: “One stout was two sweet”
Too bad it was just you and Charles otherwise you could have said One stout was Two sweet for the Three of us. 🙂

On the last point first, I’ll store that as a possible future blog post. Remember, you can’t sue me after 6 years.
I do hope the blood was part of the Halloween theme, which they take very seriously here.
I’ve never heard of that film. Should I have ?

It’s a minor fave of mine. British made.

And I would never sue, merely ask for a pint in person some time in lieu. 🙂

Shouldn’t that be The Jolly Crispin, Martin? Did you not drop in at The Duke William, or have you ticked that?

All done some years ago, so the 3 new entries in Stourbridge were quite a contrast to those pubs. We’d have popped in the Crispin or the Duke but had bust our limits (and you can’t drink on top of a curry). Next time.

I can assure you that drinking on top of a curry is possible (and without disaster!) 🙂

Possibly, but not if you have the mandatory mango lassi with your shashlik (see Bradford, 2013).
